Bachelor of Education, Master of Education and PhD programs in Canada
If you want to become a teacher in Canada, whatever kind of school you want to work in, you will have to obtain a teaching certificate before you can take up any position. Students can get a teaching certificate by taking an ordinary undergraduate degree and then study for an extra year to get a Bachelor of Education degree. This is especially useful if you are hoping to teach in a high school, when you will need a detailed knowledge of the subject you are going to teach as well as training in how to handle the classroom.
Some students may prefer to spend more time studying education, either because they want to teach at schools with younger pupils where a degree in another academic subject is not required or because they want to be better prepared when they enter the classroom for the first time. There are many prospective teachers who feel that the one year Bachelor of Education degree does not adequately prepare them for their first class full of unruly children.
Several universities in Canada offer a Masters degree in education or even a PhD program. This will allow students to study education in greater depth, either to better prepare them for a career in the country's schools or to allow them to carry out research into the Canadian education system. PhD programs at universities across the country allow students to look in greater depth at particular aspects of Canadian schools; everything from special needs education to the education of indigenous children. Part of both the Masters degree and a PhD would be to prepare a dissertation on a subject of your choice, studying an aspect of Canadian education that you find particularly interesting.
While students who take a Bachelor or Masters degree in education are more likely to end up in the classroom working with pupils, but generally those who study for a PhD in the subject are those who are more interested in an academic career; opportunities can include further research on subjects funded by local and national governments, teaching positions at university faculties themselves or even careers advising politicians on educational matters. Of course, there will always be some PhD students who choose to use their knowledge and skills in the classroom, while there may be others who having planned to work in schools find that they are more interested in taking their research further and never teach a class in their lives. Qualifications in education open up more possibilities than you might imagine, although most students follow the usual career path of working their way into senior positions within Canada's schools.
