Anuradhapura is an ancient city located in northern Srilanka. It was established in fourth century BC. This city is of interest to archaeologists with several monuments of historical importance. Anuradhapura is also a sacred city to Buddhists with several Dagobas . A daboga is a dome enshrining sacred relics or the bodily remains of the Buddha or articles used by him. Some of the important dagobas are Thuparma dagoba, Ruvanveli dagoba, Jetavana dagoba and Abhayagiri dagoba. Another attraction is Sri Maha Bodhi Tree. The right branch of the Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment was brought to Srilanka from Gaya in India in third century BC by princess Sanghamitta, daughter of emperor Asokha. This was planted in Anuradhapura and is venerated by Buddhists. Another attraction is Samadhi Buddha which is a world famous statue of Buddha in meditative pose from fourth century AD. It is acknowledged as a masterpiece. Isurumuniya is a picturesque rock temple built in third century BC. It homes beautiful stone sculptures.
Colombo which is the capital of Srilanka is the largest city and main port of the country. It is also the commercial and financial center of Srilanka. A bustling city with the verve and vivaciousness of modernity, Colombo still keeps the lazy charm of bygone era. The Fort is one of the important landmarks of Colombo. It was originally a fort during the Portuguese and Dutch periods but now is a major commercial center of the country. Many places of tourist interest can be visited in the fort by foot. Adjacent to fort is Pettah. You can do all your shopping in this bazaar district. Galle Face Green is a promenade facing the sea which was actually built by British. Built originally for horse racing, it is now the largest open space in Colombo and a popular picnic spot. Mount Lavinia is one of the beaches that form the important attractions of Srilanka Tourism. Just twelve kilometers away from Colombo, this beach was even famous during colonial era.
