How to safeguard your Smartphone and ensure security of data
Data security over the Internet has become very crucial with a lot of incidents of online identity theft and data loss. I never cared or paid enough attention to data security until my Smartphone was infected with a virus. I had some important information and contacts related to my business, some beautiful pictures of mine and personal data on my Samsung Galaxy S. I couldn’t control my frustration when I lost all my valuable data. If you had any such experience of mine, you would know how difficult it is to go without a phone. It will greatly affect your business.
There was no use repenting for what had happened. I should have taken the needed precautions earlier and enabled data security on my Smartphone. Without my Smartphone, I felt handicapped as I could do everything on my Galaxy S- surf, chat, make calls, and take pictures. And for a whole day I didn’t have access to the Internet. I dropped into my friend’s home to check my mails but the instant connectivity I had was lost. The only satisfaction I had was that I had my Cox Phone Service and I could make call to my friends. Thank God the call charges were relatively very low on my phone and it helped me to stay connected with friends and make long business calls.
I got my Smartphone fixed after two days. I was very careful this time and I installed some security measures to prevent anymore virus attacks. I would like to share some of them with you.
LOCK YOUR PHONE: Enable a screen lock on your phone. You have different types of screen lock on Smart phones. You have the number lock and pattern lock where you have to draw pattern. These are effective ways by which you can restrict other people from using your phone without your notice.
PASSWORD PROTECTION: Enable password protection on your phone. Use passwords that are hard to be guessed.
SECURE BLUETOOTH AND Wi-Fi: People leave their Bluetooth on at most of the times which makes your phone visible to other phones having Bluetooth facility. You have to keep your Smartphone’s Bluetooth mode turned off when you are not using the service. You have to be very careful when you open your phone network to a public Wi-Fi hotspot as the connection may not be secure. So do not use such service unless you are sure of its Data security.
INSTALL FIREWALL AND ANTI VIRUS: Install good antivirus software in your Smartphone to protect it from viruses. Also install other capable security applications like Firewall which keep a control on malware and insecure data connections. Keep your antivirus active on auto mode as this will notify you when a virus enters your phone.
ENCRYPT SMARTPHONE DATA: Encrypt the data on your Smartphone so that others will not have access to your personal information even if your phone is stolen.
BACKUP DATA: It is good to backup your data on the Smartphone. Even though we follow intense security measures, there are still chances for your data to be stolen. We use the Internet profusely and we cannot identify malicious software and websites. So it is always better to backup your data. Now there are advanced methods by which you can backup your data other than the traditional methods of using, CDs, Floppies and disks. You have the online backups which allow you to secure data in an offline site.
UPDATES: Regularly install the software and operating system updates on your Smartphone. Similarly do not download any unknown applications. You get to download a lot of exciting applications on your Smartphone. But there are chances that these applications are false and can use your personal data.
