All the citizens in the United Kingdom would be familiar with the name of the postal service: ‘Royal Mail’. It is the oldest postal service in the United Kingdom and boasts of a history of over 360 years.

The postal service was started in 1635 by King Charles I and making its humble beginnings from London, its network spread far and wide in the entire kingdom which later became the base for the development of multiple services and facilities that are provided in the United Kingdom to this day. In the earliest days, Postal services UK were used only by the wealthy people as it was expensive but from the beginning of the 20th century, the postal services UK began to be used across all sections of society, rich or poor.

Many technical changes occurred in the postal services during the 19th century which further enhanced the postal system and created a huge revenue base for the national treasury. Postal stamps were also introduced during this period and the postal system also made its ay across the seas to the other parts of the world.

By the time the 19th century ended, the production of paper became cheaper and more widespread not just in the United Kingdom but also across the globe. Envelopes and post cards were now easier to manufacture and they entered the mainstream of the social life of the masses. Later, typewriters and finally the computers gave huge impetuses to the postal systems. The expenditure on management and manufacturing of the postal stationery and postal system began to decrease and on the other hand the living standard and the needs of people continued to rise which made postal services one of the pillars of the modern society.

Today the postal system in the United Kingdom is organized by the national and private companies which work hand in hand domestically and internationally to provide excellent services to not just the individuals but also for business establishments and institutions. Today they have made the posting of letters almost next to inexpensive.

The computerization of the services has also expanded the scope of the postal services. The postal service are not more limited to the sending of letters to the right address but they have also become the principle mode of sending small goods of less quantity to over large distances, to manage and organize the marketing campaigns for the businesses and to allow the people to exchange information in the most inexpensive and easy manner.

Despite the widespread use of the email services, the postal services have not lost their importance as many people believe. In fact, the email and internet culture has increased the importance of the postal services as posts have become rarer and therefore more attention grabbing for the receivers. They also develop an intimate relation with the receiver as he or she is made to feel the effort that goes in sending an actual post instead of the email. This trend has rightly been appreciated by the businesses and they continue to widen their customer bases through the postal marketing campaigns.
