Heeding the Call of Leadership: Your Full Attention Can Help You Reach for the Stars

They say that to know an individual better, you need to be that individual and it's not dressing up and behaving the same way as s/he does. In most cases, it just takes listening to what the person needs to say for you to know his/her side on a particular matter. A really good leader knows how to lend an ear to his/her subordinates too.

Certainly, listening is a vital factor in efficient leadership and management. It's inadequate that your side is the law, as you have to take the other side into consideration too. Your plan for success may have a set of weaknesses the other plan can answer if the two work hand in hand. Listed here are some good techniques on precisely how to listen to your fellow employees so that everyone will be happy.

Look steadily. Focus on the person speaking; don't look right, left, down, up, behind him/her, or not to mention, fall asleep. Looking at the individual talking is a good gesture that indicates that the person has your full attention. Not only will you hear your colleague's two cents, but also make him/her feel that you're taking his/her recommendation seriously.

Ask after Being Asked. If you were asked how your weekend went, it is respectful to answer immediately and ask the individual the same. This will certainly make the individual feel that you look after your coworkers in which the deed can earn you some recognition. Of course, ask proper questions.

Give Your Praise. Since leadership and management training teaches ambitious leaders to be a role model for others, it implies you must share what you've learned. When your colleague submits his/her work, assess it, and give it some positive assessment. Any errors pointed out in and remarks and suggestions for a piece of work can help make a better version in the future. Believe it or not, s/he'll remember you for the things you said.

Toughen Up. Be prepared to answer challenging queries your colleagues may ask you. While you may not exactly be a know-it-all, it pays to share what you understand with others so that they have a good idea of what to do. Leadership consulting professionals remind that the road to being a successful leader is a bumpy one, but it's achievable nevertheless.
