All About Neoprene Tubing
Neoprene is the DuPont registered brand name of polychloroprene and a type of synthetic rubber or elastomer. For high resistance to water and chemical resistance, often we see its uses in wetsuits and dry suits. Like fluoropolymer resins, Neoprene has specific characteristics that makes it good candidate for uses as heat shrink tubing.
Features of Neoprene tubing
1. Its tensile strength is over 1000 PSI.
2. Tear resistance of Neoprene tubing is 120 lb-ft per inch.
3. Increase in weight due to water absorption is only 5%.
4. Maximum workable temperature is 135°C.
5. On the lower side, it can withstand up to -40°C.
6. Dielectric strength is around 21.1 kV per mm.
7. Comfortable shrink ratio of 2:1.
8. Resistant to various chemicals, sunlight and ozone.
Application of Neoprene
Synthetic rubber Neoprene has numerous applications across different industries. Most prominent uses are in, adhesives and coatings, automobiles, wire and cable insulation and protection and construction engineering.
Automobiles
Major reasons for Neoprene’s uses in automobiles are,
1. Outstanding tensile strength
2. Resistance to sunlight, petroleum and natural weathering
Common applications of Neoprene in any automobile are in power transmission belts, boots, hose and tubing, brake cup, air springs, shock absorbers, ball joints and steering linkage seals.
Adhesives and coatings
Neoprene makes a successful compound for contact adhesive. Generally, neoprene based adhesives are available in aqueous and solvent form. It can be of low, medium and high viscosity. With proper compounding neoprene based adhesive can be used in different types of applications.
Construction engineering
Major uses of Neoprene in construction are in -
1. Window seals
2. Bridge bearing pads and seals.
3. Waterproofing membrane.
Neoprene can be easily compounded and formulated for extrusion purpose. That makes it suitable for wide variety of sealing activities. Neoprene has been used as bridge and highway seals since decades. Chemical inertness and resistance to petroleum, sunlight and ozone save it from natural aging. Besides, water resistance of Neoprene allows it to be used as waterproofing membrane in wide variety of applications.
Wire and cable insulation
Polychloroprene’s natural rubber like quality along with higher heat and corrosion resistance makes it suitable for uses in protective jackets and tubing. Applications are cover for heavy duty and extra heavy duty cables. Excellent tensile strength makes it tolerant to cracking, bending and natural abrasion through out the service life of those cables. Neoprene tubing also works as good heat shrink tubes in moderate to difficult environment.
