What do I do with my old tyres?
Many people seam to be in the dark when it comes to recycling their tyres. It is only the moment when they go and by new tyres that they find out that the tyre dealer has actually obligation to take in the old tyres and recycle them.
Finland is one of the top countries in the world when it comes to recycling tyres. Over 90% of our tyres get recycled. Tyres are being used in different purposes one example being in construction sites.
The law says that if the owner of the tyre is not arranging the recycling of the tyre, he or she is obligated to take the tyres to the seller of the tyres and the seller is responsible in taking in the tyres without extra cost.
The lifeline of tyres can be put into four different steps. These steps are the collecting of the materials, which happens i.e. in Indonesia or Thailand. Then the tyres will be produced, used and finally recycled.
You should not take tyres to the recycling site in any case. There are many proper use cases for tyres and they are one of the easiest objects to recycle.
The whole recycling process of tyres (in Finnish: renkaita) is funded with a recycling tax that is being added to the price of the tyre. The tax depends on the type of the tyre.
In Finland alone every year 3,3 million tyres go out of use. This is 37 000 tons of tyre. From this amount approximately 95% goes to recycle and is used mainly in infrastructure such as roads and building sites.
With your local Vianor you can easily recycle your tyres without even noticing it. When you buy new tyres and you need to get rid of your old ones you can just drive in and they will take care of the rest for you. It doesn’t get any easier from there.
So to put it simple if you have any extra tyres around that cannot be used anymore, you should definitely recycle them by taking them to your local tyre dealer.
