Preparing your car for the summer months

With the arrival (finally) of the summer and warmer weather (hopefully) there are some car parts we are more likely to change than in winter. Some, including your air con or window regulators, are more obvious than others, like gas struts for example. Perhaps your ac has not been working properly since last year. When it starts raining and temperatures degrade though, we always tend to push its repair forward. Until temperatures rise again to 25°C or over and we are stuck in traffic with no cool air circulating in the car. Of course you try switching on your ac in the hope it has fixed itself over the winter. But no luck, a potentially expensive reparation awaits us. Air cons are unfortunately rather expensive car parts.

On the bright side, though a car air con consist of various separate parts. As they can break down independently, overall only one of them will need replacing in case of malfunctioning or complete failure. Apart from the hoses and various other small parts, the ac mainly consists of a compressor and a condenser. By means of a refrigerant gas these two parts ensure the air is cooled before it is injected into the cabin. The ac compressor pressurises the air conditioning gas which then passes through the condenser which changes it to fluid. The reason for that is that fluid can more easily pass through the complete air conditioning system. The process of pressurising the refrigerant gas creates heat. The condenser allows this heat to escape when the gas becomes a fluid.

Due to use, the wires of your window regulator can become weakened by wear or snap completely. You’ll immediately notice of course as you won’t be able to move your car window up or down anymore. This is arguably even more of a nuisance than an ac failure. After all, imagine how often you actually open a window. More often than you’d think. Even if your car has an air con you might still want to roll down your windows every once in a while. If it just under 20°C you don’t really use the latter, but an open window is nice to let some fresh air in. Not to mention having to open your window when stopped and searched for example.

An air conditioner condenserlooks like the heater motor of your car and made of aluminium. Apart from being lightweight, aluminium also has a cooling tendency. The condenser can be found just in front of the heater part of the car. Speaking of heater though, this is often confused with the air conditioning parts. The air conditioning of a car solely circulates cold air whereas the heater blows hot air into the cabin. The car part responsible for injecting either hot or cold air into the cabin is called the cabin suction fan.

Before the air is blown into the cabin though, it passes through the pollen filter first to clean it from all sorts of particulates including dirt, bacteria, and pollen and exhaust fumes. All these tiny airborne elements can have a damaging effect on our health resulting in headaches, nausea, allergic reactions or drowsiness. Especially the latter can of course have very dangerous consequences when driving.

Still not everyone is equipped with a car air con these days. There are still plenty of people who air their cars 1990s-style: by opening the windows. Rumour has it some of us still have classic window winders. You know the ones that come with a handle you have to turn round for the window to roll down.

So to avoid strange and potentially somewhat embarrassing situations and impracticalities in general, it’s best to ensure your car windows are in good working order at all times.
