Time changes most of the things, one thing that has seen a 360 degree change is the preference of diesel engine over petrol engines. There was a time when diesel cars garnered low sales and petrol powered cars were selling like hot cakes. However with petrol prices going through the roof, diesel has become an obvious choice of the customers. Diesel cars were also under the threat of getting an extra bump in price due to the hike in excise duty levied on diesel cars. Indian car market is one of the most susceptible car markets in the world. To make a car successful it has to be frugal and should carry a lucrative price to suit the pocket of the middle class customers.

Hatchbacks were the most preferred choice of the customers of late but things changed when car makers started offering cars in the range of Rs 5 lakhs to Rs 8 lakhs. Here we are going to talk about the entry level sedan cars that come with a price tag of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh. Cars like Ford Fiesta Classic, Toyota Etios diesel, Tata Indigo Manza, Mahindra Verito and Maruti Swift Dzire are the top five entry level sedan cars that managed to strike a chord with the Indian customers who opt for value for money cars. What makes these cars more tempting is the diesel engine doing duty under the hood.

Ford Fiesta Classic with a suave design and a powerful engine of 1,399 cc displacement 4, cylinder diesel mill makes one of the most lucrative options in the entry level sedan cars. The sedan made it to the Indian roads few years back but what keeps it going is the excellent drivability and bold styling helps in keeping it abreast competition. The engine is capable of belting out 66.05 hp of high power output and delivers a mileage of 13.9 kmpl in city conditions. While on highways the sedan returns a fuel efficiency of 18.3 kmpl. The sedan propels from 0 to 60 kmph in just 6.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 160 kmph.

Toyota Etios diesel is yet another option available at a price of Rs 7.80 lakhs. Launched last year in the Indian car market, the diesel version has been a catalyst in boosting up Toyota’s sales in India. Toyota offers more space and cargo space that renders it a good position in the segment. Powered with a 1,364 cc, 4 cylinder engine the Etios diesel churns out a power of 67.04 hp and offers a mileage of 14.2 kmpl in city conditions and 19 kmpl on highway. The car can sprint from 0-60 kmph in only 5.92 seconds. The sedan also reaches a top speed of 163 kmph.

Tata Indigo is another strong player in the segment that also offers good cargo and cabin space. The sedan comes with a price tag of Rs 7.57 lakh, armed with a 4 cylinder 1,248 cc engine, the car engenders a high power output of 87.8 hp. Fuel efficiency proffered by the sedan ranges between 11.6 kmpl to 17.1 kmpl in city and on highways respectively. Tata Manza reaches a top speed of 168 kmph and can zoom to 60 kmph from zero in a meagre 5.83 seconds.

After Mahindra and Renault’s divorce, the Logan sedan fell in the lap of Mahindra which the company decided to give a soft facelift along with re-naming it. Re-launched as Mahindra Verito the car retained the same powertrain that comes with a displacement of 1,461 cc, 4 cylinder engine. This engine generates a maximum power output of 64.1 hp and runs 13.6 kmpl in city conditions while it returns 19.3 kmpl on highways. In 6.07 seconds, the sedan car touches 60 kmph of speed from zilch and zooms further to achieve 144 kmph of high speed.

Last but not the least, Maruti’s Swift Dzire is another offering in the segment that has managed to besot the Indian customers so much that it is single handedly driving sales of the auto major in this segment. Available at Rs 7.09 lakhs, Swift Dzire offers value for money. Under the hood is a 1,248 cc, 4 cylinder engine that rushes the sedan from zero to sixty in just 5.6 seconds, followed by a top speed of 156 kmph. Fuel economy of the sedan ranges between 13.5 kmpl to 18.9 kmpl in city conditions and highways.
