We know how important it is to look your best on your special day. So is the wedding invitation. Therefore, one necessarily needs to know the rules when writing and sending invitations for a wedding. Certain etiquette need to be followed when writing formal invitations. Here we will see more on the etiquette to be followed while addressing wedding invitations.

Even though your wedding is going to be a family event with only close family and friends present, you need to send formal invitations. The following are important and proper etiquette for addressing wedding invitations.

• Titles before every name are never to be missed. A proper title like Ms, Mrs., Mr., Dr, etc. should be used. Military titles and ranks, titles of clergy should be appropriately used.

• Short forms for names should be strictly avoided, even for close family members. Guests above 18 years of age should be given separate invitations using proper titles.

• A formal wedding invitation should be hand-written or typed and printed ones are also accepted.

• Lastly, wedding invitations should be sent at least 6-8 weeks in advance with RSVP attached. This applies even to friends and family members.

When you want to address wedding invitations with children, remember that the outer envelop should bear the names of the parents whereas names of children (below 18 years of age) should be mentioned inside the envelop. The following are different ways on how to address wedding invitations for couples, single guests, younger guests and miscellaneous guests.

Single Guests

• Single females (unmarried or divorced) should be addressed as Miss (or Ms.) followed by the first and last name.

For e.g. Miss Jack Johnson

• In case, a single and divorced female continues using her name after marriage, she should be referred to as Mrs. followed by her first name and last name,

For e.g. Mrs. Jack Johnson

• Singles males are addressed as Mr. followed by the name.

For e.g. Mr. Jack Johnson

Couples

• In case the woman has kept her maiden name after marriage, she should be titled as Mrs. followed by her name and maiden name. The name of the husband should be written separately.

For e.g. Mrs. Sara Jones and Mr. Jack Johnson

• You can send a single invitation to unmarried couples staying together; but it is essential to mention their individual full names separately. Here you can either write the surnames alphabetically or write the name of the person closest to you first.

For e.g. Ms. Sara Jones and Mr. Jack Johnson

Miscellaneous

• In case the woman has a military title, her name should be mentioned separately.

For e.g. Lieutenant Susan Anthony and Mr. Jack Johnson

• The proper way of addressing wedding invitations for doctors is 'Dr.' followed by the name.

For e.g. Dr. and Mrs. Jack Johnson

• In a married couple, if both are doctors, you can address them as follows.

For e.g. Doctors Susan and Jack Johnson

• The judge is to be addressed as 'the Honorable' on the outer envelop and can be mentioned as simply 'Judge' in the inner envelop.

For e.g. The Honorable and Mrs. Jack Johnson

• Professors are also addressed with the title 'Professor' or 'Dr.' (in case of PhD).

For e.g. Professor and Mrs. Jack Johnson

These were some of the tips and etiquette on addressing wedding invitations which should be followed for formal events. If you are looking for informal wedding invitation wording, you can try out poems or different artistic styles of invitations. Lastly, do not forget to attach the RSVP, dress code, etc. along with the invitation. Good luck!
