A Parent’s Right to Desire
Parents with children in English schools want them to learn new languages, learn horse riding and swimming. On the contrary, rural parents want English medium schools and teachers in them. It looks as though every parent has a certain expectation from a school especially when it comes to getting their child educated; and why shouldn’t they? After all they’re paying for it. In the Verma household, Kavita verma is a student of class 5 in the Bangalore International School.
She studies four languages out of which 1 is a foreign language, attends horse riding sessions every morning, knows swimming, has a class on gymnastics once a week and a class on ballet twice a week. She has a computer at home and browses on the internet after school to do her home work or submit an assignment. The domestic servant, who works in the same house hold and has served the family for fifteen long years, has a son who attends the Municipal school. His books are free, and so is his uniform.
At one stage when Kavita was in class 5 and Mrs. Verma had lots of time to talk to the Domestic servant, she said” How lucky your son is to be in a government school that pays for his uniform and books. His tuition is also free…..then what do you spend on for him? “We’ve had to pay so much for my daughter. Right from her tuition fee to her books and her uniforms- three sets that too! In case it rains and one set doesn’t dry! “Yes madam, replied the servant, but see how much your daughter is getting out of all that you have spent.” In my son’s case half the time the teachers don’t come. How will the children study or learn anything at all? At times, if my husband is not well, my son has to sit in the shop, to earn a daily income.
It’s very difficult to support the family, madam”. At least, you can afford to pay for a tuition, if you daughter can’t understand a subject in school, isn’t it. But what about my son? For how many subjects shall I keep a tuition for him, when in a month at least, each subject teacher is off for at least a week, leaving the students to themselves. We can’t even think of sending our son to a college at this rate, because who knows whether he will pass school. Do you know many children in his class are repeating the year? At least 8 students! I can’t even teach my child as you can, Madam because of my illiteracy”. In the end Mrs. Verma said” every parent wants the best for their child but is so happens that unfortunately getting an education is not everybody’s cup of tea.
