Donate unwanted furniture
As time goes on, many of us end up with pieces of unwanted furniture in our houses, either because we move into smaller homes as the children leave or because we have invested in new pieces that are more fashionable. One option is to sell these extra pieces, through the wanted ads in your local paper or online sites such as Craig's List. But sometimes these pieces are so old and so out of style that there is little chance of anyone handing over a few dollars to take them off our hands.
Luckily, there is another, much more charitable alternative to selling old and unwanted furniture; donating it to charities that provide furniture for homeless people when they move into their first house. These charities will take pieces off your hand, no matter how old, but they must be safe and they must be in decent condition; no missing drawers or broken bedsteads!
The Salvation Army is one charity that accepts donations of furniture, either to sell in their thrift stores to raise vital money for projects, but more often items like this go into a central store and are then handed out when homeless people manage to get themselves off the streets and into accommodation. It is an expensive business furnishing a home, and those who have struggled hard just to get a roof over their heads may not have the spare cash to buy even basic items like beads and sofas.
Charitable organisations that provide these kind of services are so desperate for donations in these difficult times that they will even come and collect the items from your home free of charge. So not only are you doing something nice for the people in your local community but you are also getting rid of unwanted furniture at no cost to yourself.
It is not just the Salvation Army that accepts donations of furniture; there will undoubtedly be locally-run groups that do the same thing in your community if you would prefer to donate to them and make sure that your items go towards helping people in your area.
