Catalytic converters from harmful to harmless

By Subscribe to RSS | May 2nd 2012 | Views:

The world is facing one of its major problems today; pollution. The environment has been disturbed and the once clean water we drink and fresh air we breathe are now contaminated by harmful substances. It is undeniable that technology and the advancement of the industry is one of the roots of environmental degradation. Life for man has become easier but the environment was sacrificed along the way. This is the reason why people are looking for effective ways to help save the environment and combat pollution.

Air pollution is caused by harmful emissions given off by vehicles. As the number of vehicles increase, so does air pollution. Since the increase of automotives cannot be prevented because of the increase of demand from the population, other alternatives of reducing air pollution have been made. Car manufacturers kept looking for ways to reduce the negative effects of emissions to the environment. One of the devices they have come up with is the catalytic converter.

The catalytic converter works by cleaning the gas that passes through the vehicle's exhaust system. It works by converting harmful pollutants into less harmful substances before emission. As an example, it converts carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide to make the harmful substance harmless.

Catalytic converters are typically crafted from metal or ceramic honeycombed monolith substrate that contains metal catalysts. An intumescent mat wraps the substrate. The substrate is perfectly fitted to the exhaust system and it expands when heated thereby insulating the substrate. The chemical reaction happens once the gasses go through the catalyst. This reaction turns harmful pollutants into risk-free gas and water. The catalyst is made from a mixture of different metals like palladium, platinum and rhodium. What really happens during the method is this: when hydrocarbons react with oxygen, it produces carbon dioxide; nitrogen oxide on the other hand reacts with carbon monoxide in order to come up with nitrogen and carbon dioxide and in turn, reacts with hydrogen to supply nitrogen and water vapor.

Studies made for the efficiency of the device have shown that indeed, catalytic converters are capable of reducing the emission of harmful gases that cause air pollution. As automotive technology is improving, new adjustments and enhancements to this device are made to enhance its ability to cut back harmful emissions. New cars are being manufactured by the day but they are not equipped with the latest technology on emission control. But with catalytic converters, you no longer have to worry about contributing to the degradation of the environment.

Catalytic converters come in all sizes and shapes, but there are only a few manufacturers that you should trust. Magnaflow Exhaust and Race and Diesel are some of them. Some states have stringent requirements on catalytic converters, making it easier to buy the wrong parts. But at 4 Wheel Parts, buying catalytic converters has never being easier. Whether you are looking for California Legal Direct Fit catalytic converter or a Universal Fit, you will find them at a low price and fast shipping.
