With more than 70 percent of India’s population living in villages, a trip to India can’t be complete without a visit to rural India. The cultural, historical, spiritual, and environmental diversity of rural India can enthrall even the most discerning tourist. However, with around 650,000 villages in the country, it may be quite confusing to plan India rural tours, especially for the first time visitors. This article aims to focus on some of the most important factors to consider when planning for an India rural tour.

Things to Consider When Planning India Rural Tours

India rural tour is a chance to explore the antique architectural works of temples, forts, and palaces of rural India, diverse religious and cultural tradition of the country, and of course the exotic beauty of rivers and mountains. Following are the major things to plan in your India rural tour.

Where to travel: Tourism accounts for 8.78% of the total employment and 6.23% of GDP in India. Understanding the potential of India rural tours, the government has already specified 31 villages for the Explore Rural India Campaign. With all the seven territories and 28 states in India offering several interesting rural India touring options, you should choose a perfect location for your tour. For example, the Sawantwadi village, located at the Sahyadri Mountains in the Indian State of Maharashtra can help you to explore maximum features of rural India in short package tour. You can do a little bit of research in the internet in order to decide an appropriate location for your tour.

When to visit: From November to mid-February is the best time to visit rural destinations of India. The weather is quite cool in this time of the year. From March onwards, the temperature starts rising and can go all the up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The rainy season starts from June and continues to August. So, it will be better to avoid this period. If you plan to visit villages in the Himalayan region, the period between April to June can be perfect. On the other hand, if you are planning to visit a rural event or festival at a particular time of the year, you should plan your tour accordingly.

Advance bookings: You can visit rural India either as independent traveler or with any guided trip. If you prefer visiting independently, you should book air tickets and railway tickets in advance. In most of the times, there is a heavy rush for train tickets in India. Moreover, you may face some problems in finding accommodation, especially when you are planning to the tour in remote villages. Therefore, it is advisable that you should book all essential tickets in advance. However, the most convenient solution to this is to join a guided trip and transfer the whole responsibility on the tour arranger.

Homework: First time visitors should be prepared to receive a cultural shock upon arrival in India as well as in the villages of the country. Crowded bus and trains, untidy roads, big shopping malls, noisy marketplaces, language difference, and so many other things may be quite different than what you would have thought. Thus, it is better to know about the country before land there. You can read printed books and magazines, research over the internet, and watch documentaries to form clear idea about the country.

Considering all the above mentioned points, you can plan your rural India tour perfectly.
