What to Expect from Your IT Consultancy

For many businesses, choosing the right IT consultancy can feel like one of the biggest business decisions of the year. At best, a bad IT team can result in temperamental email or file sharing system, and at worst it could mean the difference between retrieving a lost file in time for an important pitch, and missing your deadline. So many IT consultancies in London seemingly offer great things by using words that sound impressive to the untrained ear and making long lists of ‘improvements’ to the current IT problems your office are dealing with, which are all just code for entirely different systems with different selling points, but will quite possibly not address any existing underlying issues within your computer network. So, what are the signs to look out for when determining the good London IT consultancies, from the bad?

Firstly, a good consultancy will ask a lot of questions. ‘Are there any current issues with your IT system?’, ‘why are you switching from your current consultancy?’ are the types of questions you should be hearing, as any decent IT Consultancy in London will work hard to ‘find the pain’ with your current IT situation, as well as working to gain a good grasp on your business as it currently is and where it’s going to (e.g. are you expanding? How quickly?) etc.

Secondly, watch out for untailored packages. If you are being offered ‘package B’ and are just given a list of services included within this, the chances are that you aren’t really being offered exactly what your business needs. Whilst most places will have standard packages that they use as guidelines, some tailoring will almost always be required to suit the individual business needs and aims.

One of the most important things for any business owner to remember is that technical support is a necessity. Call centre style support will not be enough, you need your own assigned expert who will be available on a number throughout the working day and preferably be willing to come to the office in order to solve the problem internally. This sounds like a luxury, but imagine half of your computer system going down, or your email system going down on a particularly busy day – usually your staff won’t have time to follow troubleshooting questions and solution instructions over the phone. Frequently, any issues with your IT systems, whilst primarily being the fault of your London IT consultancy, can also be in part down to inferior equipment choices. After your IT audit, a good consultancy will suggest any necessary or advised equipment changes you may need to make – and even better, some consultancies have established relationships with vendors for competitive pricing and same or next day delivery!

Finally, what are the IT essentials you should be offered? System security is a must for any business, in the form of computer and server anti-virus, spam and virus protection, web filtering and online backup to preserve your company’s data. Online backup with cross platform support, recovery, encryption and archiving ensure that all of your company’s data is protected, safe and available when you need it.
