The Best Sweets and Confectionery from Our Youth

By Anthony Subscribe to RSS | June 27th 2012 | Views:

We all have fond memories of our childhood, and many of these revolve around sweets and foods. While we still have access to sweets today, it seems that for whatever reason it's hard to get quite as excited about them today as we once did and as such we often end up being a lot more blasé when we get the opportunity to treat ourselves. Nothing is quite as exciting when you're an adult as it was when you were younger...

And for many of us, confectionery was different when we were younger. Some of us for instance remember the days when Starburst were called Opal Fruits, while others of us who are more senior still remember the days when we would get sweets from a traditional sweet shop.

All of us had favourites and different brands and types from different eras that we enjoyed more than anything else. Here we will look at some of the classics.

Peanut Brittle: Peanut Brittle is not always easy to come by these days unless you're in a real old fashioned sweet shop, but it is one of the best and most addictive forms of confectionery. Basically it's sweet peanut toffee that you break off in pieces and it's partly the crunchy and fragile texture that makes it so satisfyingly moreish.

Gobstoppers: Gobstoppers are one of the most classic of the classic sweets. These are huge pieces of solid candy that you suck and that are too solid and large to chew. Part of the appeal of gobstoppers was the fact that it was a challenge to see what the largest one you could eat was, though in retrospect it seems fairly obvious that our parents did this mostly as a way to keep us quiet for a bit. Touché...

Liquorice Allsorts: Liquorice allsorts are thankfully still around. They're certainly strange, but the varaiety of textures and the bitter liquorice combined with the sugar has an appeal that's hard to place your finger on.

Sherbert Dips: Sherbert dips are like two sweets in one. On the one hand you get a bag full of sour sherbert which is very appealing, but at the same time you also get a lolly to dip in it. This then allows you to scoop out the sherbert by getting it to stick to the lolly, meaning that you get both a lolly to eat and a bag of sherbert. The even more inventive ones of these however came with a straw that was made of sherbert. This then allowed you to actually suck the sherbert up through the straw as though you were drinking a bottle of coke and then finally eat the straw afterward. Technically I suppose this was a form of recycling for children... Who says that sweets aren't good for you?

Lucky Charms: Okay these aren't sweets, and they're still available in the US, but in the UK and Europe you need a very specialist shop to find this cereal that was deemed too unhealthy for children and which made some want it all the more.
