Seasonal coats for guys

There are many different kinds of men’s coats, and they are suitable for different occasions. If you’re looking to pick up something to help you survive the winter, consider not only its warmth and comfort, but style. The type of coat you buy will dictate its suitability for various situations, and it is always worth taking the time to find something that will keep you both looking and feeling at your best. Here’s a run-down of some of the most popular coats currently on the scene.

The leather jacket

These are enjoying something of a boom in popularity at the moment, and for good reason. A good quality leather jacket is an extremely versatile coat that – within reason – goes with just about anything. It doesn’t matter whether you’re dressed in jeans and a t-shirt and just need to grab an extra layer to keep the chill off, or whether you’re in smart trousers and a shirt and want a coat that finishes the look without making you appear too staid. Not only that but they are warm, but not overly heavy, and unlike some other coats they have a ‘wow’ factor that is hard to top.

The overcoat

If you are looking for something specifically to be worn with a suit, the overcoat is the only real choice for you. You will have seen plenty of these coats around on cold days, since they are the standard choice for the businessman who needs an extra layer without compromising his overall appearance. The good news here is that overcoats are very easy to buy. Their style has changed surprisingly little in the last fifty or so years and they show every sign of retaining this stability. They are typically conservative, knee-length coats in neutral colours such as charcoal or black. There are variations, of course, and if your day-to-day suit is patterned or something a little unusual, you may want to choose your coat’s fabric to match this.

As with all coats, bear in mind that it needs some extra room inside to accommodate the additional layers. Make sure you try it on whilst wearing your suit itself and possibly another top too, so that it will still look good on the very coldest days. Remember that many such coats have padded shoulders, which may appear odd if your suit also has padding.

Other options

Aside from these popular staples, there are plenty of other options available. Good-quality coats tend to be relatively expensive, so make sure you will get value for money out of your purchase and that it will work in the circumstances for which you most need it.

If you already have covered the casual versatility of a leather coat and the conservative warmth of a good overcoat, you might like to consider one of the in-between options – of which there are many. The pea-coat is a lighter, double-breasted coat suitable for milder winters, and just as smart as a quality overcoat. The trench coat is another smart variation on the businessman’s favourite – durable and good for wet weather but not nearly as warm. Duffle coats have recently become an emerging trend in certain circles, and again offer a good degree of warmth. All of these are strong choices and good alternatives to the heavier overcoat.

Men’s coats come in many different forms, but there are several clear options for the new buyer that have stood the test of time and should remain wearable for many years to come. Good coats tend to be quite expensive, and so should be chosen with care, but this is offset by their durability and resistance to changes in style.
