How does the modern man dress in 2012?

Men's Fashion Week fell in January this year and the catwalk saw many talented designers showcasing their key pieces to be added to the fashionable man's wardrobe in the upcoming months.

Spring fashion trends include many key pieces which will see you through until the winter, such as tailored blazers in bold colours (and a neutral one for work). Tweed also appears to be a big hit this year, with many high street stores incorporating the sturdy material into their spring collections.

Dolce and Gabbana put on a spectacular tailoring show, with looks including polo necks, structured shirts and trench coats. These look great with brogue style shoes and can be teamed with a waistcoat to make perfect work wear. They can also be worn with a simple tie or cravat which takes the look into the evening with ease. When the time comes to buy a warmer jacket, the look to go for is a strong-shouldered, 1950s trench with a double breast.

Lanvin featured a very different look, with French style reigning over its collection. Spring/Summer 2012 will be all about horizontal striped t- shirts and tailored shorts with your favourite choice of boat shoes. Top off the look with a pair of aviators and a chunky cardigan in case it gets cold. This is the perfect holiday ensemble, or would work wonderfully for a casual date night.

For the more daring among you, Jean Paul Gaultier has released a special line of men's full length skirts as part of his autumn line. Wear with a long sleeved t- shirt and a lot of confidence! However if you are more subdued in your wardrobe choices, invest in a pair of men's skinny chinos, which can be worn with many different smart shirts or casual tees. These are available on the high street in many different colours and look great tucked into last year's military style boots, which have remained prominent on the catwalk this year. Though adding seasonal items to your wardrobe is a great way to maintain a fresh fashion point of view, don't forget those wardrobe staples either.

Thus, even if you aren't an avid follower of couture fashion, it is possible to get inspired by runway looks while staying on a high street budget. The best men's fashion brands make it their mission to transform runway looks into wearable, durable garments for the modern working man.
