Benefits of Bug out Bag or Emergency Bag

By David Survival Subscribe to RSS | June 15th 2012 | Views:

If the last decade has left behind any lasting reminders it is that you can never be too prepared for a disaster, whether natural or manmade. In less than ten minutes, your world is capable of being torn apart, with everything you've worked for being taken away. Have you ever thought about how you would care for yourself or your family should the necessities become unavailable for a period of time? An emergency bag, which is often referred to using other names, such as a bug out bag, 72 hour bag, survival bag, or go bag, can help you to survive should disaster strike.

While optimism is an admirable virtue, it isn't always the best for survival. For the millions of people who reassure themselves with sentiments like "It will never happen to me", those same sentiments were probably said by those who were affected by Hurricane Katrina or the tsunami of 2004. Because you never know when disaster may strike, it is important that you are prepared not only for yourself but for your loved ones as well. While optimism should never be abandoned, it will unfortunately not light fires, fill an empty stomach, or care for wounds without the right supplies.

A 72 hour bag will ensure you have enough food, medical supplies, water, and other necessities to survive for at least three days, or until help can arrive. By having all of these supplies located in a convenient emergency bag, all you will need to do is grab and go. When living in an urban setting, it is unlikely that you will be able to go to the store and grab what you need should an incident occur that causes mass hysteria. Within minutes, people will be crowding the store, pushing and shoving, in order to get the supplies they need. You, on the other hand, with your bug out bag in hand, will have everything you need, which will prevent you from having to risk your safety to venture out into the city. While the zombie apocalypse movies may not be realistic situations, they do demonstrate rather well how people react when they are desperate and are trying to survive. You never want to put yourself in a situation where you are around large groups of people fighting over bottled water and cans of tuna fish.

There are countless ways to prepare for a disaster in order to ensure you and your family are capable of surviving until help can arrive, but having a go bag is the first step in preparing for such a disaster. Even if you believe such a disaster is unlikely to strike, having a survival bag on hand will provide you with peace of mind.
