This article will talk a bit about the wood used for cutting boards. Carolina Wood Designs has some of the best cutting boards out there, in all sorts of beautiful or strong designs. There are different types of wood we use to produce our cutting boards. Some woods have tighter grains, which means less bacteria gets into the surface and the boards thus stay more sanitary. Maple and birch are very tight grained woods, as opposed to oak, which is more porous. We use maple, cherry, and walnut as three of the woods for our cutting boards. The strong, tight properties of these woods, in combination with their dramatic, and highly-contrasted colors and appearance, creates a very attractive finish, and the ability to create some of those best cutting board design you can imagine.

Here is one profile of hard maple (as distinguished from soft maple) that is used in cutting boards. The color of this wood is usually light reddish brown, but sometimes may be darker. Sapwood of maples, however, is usually lighter in general. Hard maple is fine and nicely uniform in texture. It is stiff and resistant to shrinkage and shocks. The grain is generally straight, but sometimes is swirls or is curly, which adds interest and quirks to the wood or the wood cutting board design, if that’s what is being made.

As thus, hard maple is used mostly for lumber and for veneer. Products that need to be very sturdy and durable are made typically from hard wood maple, such as furniture, cabinets, cutting boards and blocks, pianos, billiard cues, handles, novelties, bowling alleys, dance and gymnasium floors, and spools. The list can go on.

Maple is just one of the most popular types of wood used in many wood-crafted items. Cherry is also very popular for the grain interest and color it has. It gives of a light aroma that is typically pleasing to people. It has a medium density and is very firm, and strong. Wood workers and cutting board designs generally enjoy working with cherry wood because it is relatively easy to manipulate and cut, as well as providing a smooth finish and remains stable. Cutting boards using maple, cherry, and walnut woods are quite attractive and suitable for any cutting and cooking needs. Carolina Wood Designs can help you decide which will be best to bridge the gap between design practicality and your inner artistic vision for your cutting board.
