What Safety Requirements Do Commercial Builders Have to Adhere to in Australia?

When it comes to the safety of the various buildings in our cities and suburbs, Australia has a number of very strict laws in place – each commercial builder must prove that they comply with Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) regulations in order to receive their accreditation. For those people who are unfamiliar with the policies of OH&S, it is hoped that they will prevent (or, at the very least, minimise) the chances of injuries and accidents occurring in the workplace.

Even though everything that could potentially go wrong is often considered during the planning and design stages of a commercial project, it is actually a legal requirement that they be considered during construction. Whilst the laws surrounding OH&S can be quite complex, the following list details some of the hazards that commercial builders in Australia must be wary of:

Biological hazards. Viruses, mold and asbestos needed to be carefully monitored within the workplace.

Building needs to be well lit.

Chemical substances (including dust). The presence of these substances in the air must be reduces wherever possible.

Equipment and machines. These should all be of a high quality and should only be operated by trained commercial builders.

Exposed electrical lines or equipment.

Flammable or explosive materials.

Heavy loads and operating machines. There must be measures in places to prevent builders from sustaining back injuries.

High workplaces. Commercial builders should be able to reach the upper levels of the construction safely (using stairs or lifts).

Insecure scaffolding.

Insufficient first aid. Every building site requires access to appropriate first aid supplies.

Noise and vibration exposure. Exposure to high levels of these harmful hazards should be reduced wherever possible.

Objects with rough or sharp surfaces.

Obstructions that restrict movement both inside and outside the building. All builders must take measures to protect their workers and any passers by.

Lack of safety signs. All buildings must have obvious safety signs, including exit signs and clear information on fire drill procedures.

Surfaces and materials that are hot or cold to the touch.

Uneven and slippery surfaces. Builders can help to reduce these sorts of accidents by putting grips on the edge of stair treads, for example.

There are, of course, plenty of other hazards that all commercial builders need to be aware of, but a comprehensive and detailed list of these can be found in OH&S documentation (available online and in hardcopies). Whilst OH&S procedures can seem like a pain, it is important to remember that, at the end of the day, they have been put in place to save people’s lives.
