Things to Do in Hamburg
As Germany’s second-largest city after Berlin, Hamburg is a vast and varied place with plenty of things to do and see. Hamburg itself is located between two lakes, the Binnenalster and Aussenalster, and also lies on the banks of the Elbe River. There are also plenty of hotels in Hamburg that offer tourists a pleasant and comfortable stay.
Although most of the city was destroyed during the 2nd World War, a small part of the “old” city has survived and has been restored. Strolling around the Alstadt, visitors can visit the Rathaus, which is the City Hall. Nearby, tourists can go shopping in the many different arcades and galleries located around the Neuer Wall. Perhaps the greatest is the Alster Arcade, which is very large, majestic and so white that it is near-blinding in full sun.
After visiting the Alster Arcade, visitors may want to climb all 453 steps to reach the top of the St. Michael’s Church. Here there are magnificent views across the entire city. For those looking for something more adventurous, there are cruises along the Elbe where passengers will be able to see where some of the world’s largest ships are built.
For something a little different, visit the Fish Market on a Sunday. Visitors will have to get up early to be part of the action, but it’s worth it to see a bubbling, vibrant, colourful and unique part of Hamburg. Finally, after experiencing the sights and sounds of Hamburg, indulge in a Turkish bath at the Hamam Hafen Hamburg.
