Types of Truck Accidents
Unlike most of the accidents that occur between cars or smaller vehicles, truck accidents can be extremely huge in effect. A truck accident could be caused by human error, technical error or natural causes. However, it is important to know the various types of truck accidents and what cause them because this will help you in gauging the truck while you set out on a journey.
Truck accidents can be split into two major types. Accidents caused by other vehicles and accidents that happen because of the truck itself or its driver.
• Brakes Malfunction:
Heavy duty trucks make use of air brakes, which give out thermal power in order to bring the vehicle to a halt. Therefore, when the brakes aren’t aligned properly or if the load is too much, then there are chances of a sudden brake malfunction. This can be hazardous for the driver and the truck itself.
• Rollovers:
Most often, a truck suffers from a rollover accident if its riding at very high speeds at turns or curves. Since trucks have large bodies, while turning the radius has to be kept in mind. If you do not calculate the speed needed before turning, then there are chances that your truck may rollover from back to front.
• Jackknifing:
Most trucks that ply on icy surfaces suffer jackknifing because of the slippery surface that they are on. The main issue is that the trailer that is towed skids sooner than the main body itself. In most cases trucks collide sideways, sweep other vehicles and cause major accidents.
• Under riding:
These accidents happen when a smaller vehicle collides into the back of the truck. This proves to be fatal when the smaller vehicle is the same height as the truck’s rear.
• Head on collisions:
Since trucks travel at speeds that are extremely hard to control immediately, a head on collision with a vehicle that is the same size or smaller than the truck can prove to be extremely fatal. Head on collisions occur when smaller vehicles from the opposite direction overtake and come right into your truck or when there is a brake failure.
• Pile ups:
Pile ups happen when a truck approaches a line of vehicles at a high speed. It tends to cause a chain effect on the vehicles present on the road leading to a pile up. Since the truck travels with great force, stopping the trailer becomes extremely difficult in such situations.
