The Basic Rules of Tennis - in Simple Terms

Tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world today. It’s played in singles (two players competing against each other) and doubles (four players with two in each team). The players use a racket to strike the ball (which is covered with felt) that is served in the air.

Professional Tennis is played on five types of court surfaces like the clay court, hard court, grass court, carpet, and wood. There are four main grand slam tournaments in tennis. They are:

The Australian Open is played on hard courts.

The French Open is played on red clay courts.

Wimbledon is played on grass courts.

The US Open is played on hard courts.

Tennis is played by a slew of amateur players all over the world. A wide range of shots are played in the sport of tennis. To become a good player, one has to learn and master all the shots in the book. Some of the most important shots played by tennis players are Forehand, Backhand, Volley, and Lob Shot. One has to learn and master all these shots in order to make his or her game complete.

Apart from learning and mastering the tactics of playing the game, one has to be extremely fit and powerful to strike the ball past the opponent. One has to scuttle, stretch, and play the shots with perfect timing and speed. It’s also important for a player to have a good hand-eye co-ordination and the execution of shots has to be accurate.

People who watch tennis for the first time may feel that the rules and scoring system of tennis is very confusing, but it isn’t. The rules of tennis are as simple as you come across in any other sport. Let me give a synopsis of the basic rules of tennis from a beginner point of view. I hope these basic rules will help you to understand the game easier.

In a singles match between two players, the one who starts the game with a serve is called a ‘server’ and the player who receives the serve at the other end is called the ‘receiver’. There is a toss before the beginning of the game and the winner of this toss may choose to serve or receive the ball. The scoring rules in tennis are very simple. First, the server will announce his score before he starts the serve and the score announced by him is called ‘points’. The score starts from 15 points and elevates to 30 and then 40; this is with respect to serving and receiving the ball. When the score is at zero it is called ‘love’.

The playing rules of tennis are simple. After the server hits the ball at the opponent’s court, and if the ball lands outside the boundaries of the court, he loses one point. But if the opponent manages to hit the ball back and in case the ball touches the net and lands on the opponent’s court, it’s called ‘ball in play’. And if there is any distraction caused by the ball boy or ball girl while picking up the ball, it is considered as a “let”. Another interesting rule to remember is that if by mistake a player makes a serve when his turn isn’t up, the point would not be considered, and the game will resume from the next point.

I hope these tips would have cleared the minds of beginners and aspiring kids about the basic playing rules of tennis. Now, all you need to do is buy your tennis kit and start playing the game with your friend. If you want to learn more about the game, you can watch live tennis matches with any of the TV networks like Dish Network.
