Superstitions may sound crazy for some of you while others worship it. Frankly, believing in superstitions is an individual lookout. It is neither a myth nor a boon, it’s just a belief that you may follow or not. In any part of the globe you are sure to find people who are superstitious in one way or other.

So what are superstitions actually? Is it something weird or something that is acceptable in society? Finding a correct answer for this is impossible. Citing examples from the American, Irish, Indian histories, etc; it is believed that a black cat crossing your way will bring bad luck. There are some who believe that a crow's excrete can bring good luck if it falls on an individual.

These are a couple of examples from the many that people still believe in any corner of the world. You could surf the web using your fastest internet service provider. Even celebrities, politicians stand to believe in some or the other kind of superstitions so that they bring success in their career and work. Some structures are built in such a way that it’s should never stand as a curse for people residing or working in it.

These examples may sound funny but they might be having some historical relations that people of yesteryears might have cited that is still being followed by people till date. After all we follow what was taught to us since childhood. Here are some of the standard superstitions:

Crossing your fingers - It is a common belief that if one crosses their fingers, good luck will result. Usually it is often used when hoping for a good outcome at a critical gambling or sporting juncture. This is still one of the most prevalent superstitions in the Western world, and is practiced by many who don’t think of themselves as otherwise superstitious.

Spilling Salt - Some people believe that spilling salt brings bad luck on you. Spilling salt invokes an evil omen against you, which can be dispelled by tossing salt over your left shoulder. There are several theories about why spilling salt is considered to be bad luck, but one thing is certain; this is a superstition that has been around for a long time.

Evil Eye- It is most common among in the games, films, work and relates to performance. This superstition states that too much envy of you can invoke the evil eye, bringing you bad luck and misfortune over time. It basically means that if you act in such a way that people begin to envy you, their thoughts of envy will bring about the evil eye and begin to bring misfortune into your life.

This can hit if you if you’re ostentatiously rich, or brag too much about your accomplishments. It is one reason why people who believe in this notion choose to be quite coy about their own successes. They believe that anything too showy can bring bad luck further down the line.

Number 13 and 4 – Everyone knows the superstition concerning the number 13 which is, most profound in the western countries. You must have noticed that as most of the commercial buildings, offices, hotels don’t have the room thirteen or 13th floor.

The same is in Japan. Most of the Japanese hotels, apartments do not have the room number four. It is because the pronunciation of number four in Japanese is similar to death. The same is for the number eight. The pronunciation of number eight is similar to prosperity. That is why eight is the lucky number for most of the Japanese.

In short, superstitions are confusing and mysterious. No one knows how these originated and by whom. Going deeper into this will only confuse us. It’s better to keep superstitions background as a mystery and follow what we learn from life and not what we are taught.
