Some of Amazing Greenhouses in the World

When we talk about greenhouse effect there are few things that come to a mind for a person who knows a little about agriculture. Today, due to the global impact we all know that the environment that we live is totally contaminated due to the advent of industrialization and enormous amount of harmful gases let our in the air. Therefore, the plants that we grow also need a safe atmosphere to grow. The usage of fertilizers and pesticides has led to soil degradation and there is enormous amount of decrease in fossil fuels that are required for a healthy growth of a crop. Hence, the plants are unable to sustain themselves; there is a loss of plant diversity and use of hybrid crops. An increased level in deadly strains of bacteria from overuse of antibiotics in factory farming has led to the dependency of the developing countries on the outside sources for the procurement of pesticides, fertilizers and equipment.

To protect the plants from these harmful gases and provide them the necessary environment, greenhouses have come in to place. If we look at the history of agriculture, the idea of providing a safe environment has been in existence since Roman times. It is said that the Romans followed artificial methods of farming. For example, they used to tie cucumbers to their cart. These carts were brought out under the sun during the day and were locked inside a room during the nights. The idea was to store cucumbers in warm place. These cucumbers were placed under frames and kept in the houses that had a glass roof or covered with oiled cloth.

The modern types of glasshouses were built only in the 13th century. In Qatar it was implemented only from 1976. Today, greenhouses are found in almost all parts of the world. It is said the Netherlands have some of the largest greenhouses in the world and have occupied up to ten thousand odd hectares of its total land area. Today, greenhouses have been developed to such an extent that the structure attracts a lot of tourists. The contribution of these has become an achievement to provide increased output of food to the world. Some of the most amazing greenhouses in the world today are The Eden Project, Royal Greenhouses of Laeken, Glass city which is located in The Westland from Netherlands, RHS Gardens from the United Nations and Almeria in Spain.

The Eden Project is located in Southwestern corner of England. We have a large number of tourists who visit this place the fact being one of the largest greenhouses in the world. The greenhouse is built in shape of several domes. Each dome has its own feature in maintaining temperatures of tropical, Mediterranean and temperate. Huge varieties of plants are grown in each dome corresponding to the climatic condition maintained in their appropriate domes.

The Royal Greenhouses of Laeken belong to the royal family of Belgium. It extends up to 270000 square feet and is located in Brussels. The greenhouses present spectacular blooms during its season. However, it is open to the public only for two to three weeks during the season and is enjoyed only by the family for the rest of the year.

Another interesting fact is that the Kenya is cultivating tomatoes in greenhouses and targeting to get crops throughout the year. Likewise the United States agriculture practices have created fifty eight percent of nitrous oxide in the world, which is the third most prevalent of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Apart from this a lot of farmers have set greenhouses next to their homes. In addition, security systems like the ADT security systems also have been set up to these greenhouses to prevent any unauthorized entry.
