Digital Revolution: the things that are now digital

The advent of digital technology did not happen a few decades ago. The digital revolution may have started with the invention of the calculator. Its origins can be taken to a time further behind in history to the invention of the abacus. Nevertheless, the replacement of analog and electronic technology with digital substitutes started during the 1980’s. Here’s a list of the technology that has been digitalized over the past few years:

Books: A short story from Isaac Asimov’s collection of stories titled “The Earth Is Room Enough” played with the idea of a time when public schools went missing and children were taught by computers in rooms within the confines of the house. In the story, books that were printed on paper were considered as novelties by the younger generation who’d read text material exclusively on digital media. During the 1950’s, when the story was published, who would have thought that this was the exact scenario that was to take place decades later? Today, people prefer purchasing E-books rather than borrowing hard copies from the local library. Dozens of books can be carried around in compressed formats stored in sleek, relatively weightless devices that let you read your favorite books anywhere, anytime. In the Internet era, libraries are adapting to digital formats enabling world wide access.

Television: Did you know that the first TV was a mechanical device? It couldn’t function without the presence of some necessary mechanical equipment. Some years later, the television was introduced as a flat out electronic device. During this period, broadcasts were analog. Analog broadcasts meant low bandwidths resulting in less number of channels on your TV. But with today’s Digital TV, you can subscribe to many more channels through the same bandwidth an analog connection would use. It doesn’t stop with bandwidth cutback, only with digital technology started the advent of interactive TV media, high definition television and on demand services.

Phone: Where would we be without cell phones? Cell phones marked the beginning of wireless communications. Would cell phones have come to mesmerizing the world without digital technology? Not quite so. As was with the television, the telephone adapting digital technology presented with a lot of advantages. Needless to say, the telephone functioned only through analog transmissions until a few years ago. With digital telephony, you can place about 10 calls through a single channel that was used to place a single call through the analog network. Digital technology was introduced in the telephone industry essentially to cut costs. Now with a digital network provider like Cox Phone Service, you can make unlimited local calls and the quality of the calls is incomparable to their analog predecessors.

Internet: Never mind cell phones, what would have this world been without the advent of the Internet? Although the cell phone can be considered as a hybrid between digital and analog technology, the Internet on the other hand is based completely on digital data. All the data that you view on the Internet are broken into packets and transferred across the server to your network. Packets imply faster data transmissions. For example, a simple email is broken into little packets and transmitted from server to the domain. In the 1990’s the Internet was made available to the public and since then the Internet has taken a whole new dimension.

Apart from the revolutions in the telecommunications industry, digital revolution has covered other technologies such as the conversion of gramophones into CDs and digital formats such as the MP3s and the MPEG4s etc. The printer is another example of digitally converted technologies. The conversion of photography into the digital format from the film format is one such example. With the advent of the digital revolution, communications and globalizations have been enhanced to great extents
