Bring your own device can work wonders for any organization

By Jaggy Subscribe to RSS | April 5th 2012 | Views:

In the technologically savvy world today, it is important to keep ahead regarding the communication equipment that is flooding the market. Bring your own device is one such concept where people use personal communication devices not owned by their employers. Bring means that the device needs to be brought to the environment where the service is provided. Sometimes, this means that the device is brought to a particular location, e.g. a LAN or network cable. It could also mean that it will be time and location dependent. Yours means the person bringing the device. Own is actually referring to the ownership of the device, which could be the employees, students, guests in hotels or contractors. Devices can be any of these – smartphones, tablets, laptops etc. The services provided are internet, emails, calendar, VoIP or LAN. This means that employees in organizations can bring their own devices to work after accessing their email calendar and contacts.

Earlier employees obtained the standard Blackberry, a laptop and a password for their workstations to do their work. But now with smartphones and tablet computers being freely available, it has become a necessity for people. These devices have made it easier for people to conduct their businesses and work efficiently with the Bring your own device option. This means that instead of the company supplying the technology, they permit people to bring their own devices that make it possible to interact with the company’s network. This brings in a lot of savings because companies do not need to spend millions of dollars for their technological infrastructure. Besides, employees enjoy working on the devices that they prefer.

However, there are a few disadvantages to this Bring your own device concept. The change from company owned to personally owned can bring on a lot of problems to organizations IT departments. It may lead to a substantial decrease in the security of the company’s internet. Employees themselves should be tech savvy with equipment that is reliable for this change and be able to update the security whenever needed. Another consideration is the sensitivity level of company data. Some businesses cannot afford even a small slip when company data is leaked. For example, a legal office or a financial one cannot afford to adopt a BYOD policy. Besides, it remains to be seen – how many employees want to bring their own devices. If only a few employees show interest, it is not worthwhile to switch to this option.

The wireless industry and its technology is expanding by leaps and bounds. Organizations must keep abreast of these changes and its various twists and turns and how businesses are conducted these days. Wireless Expense Management assists those customers who use the wireless to take control of their wireless expenditure, the biggest being high wireless expenses, managing a dynamic mobile workforce that grows continuously, lack of visibility on how the devices are being used, too many applications that change from day to day and invoices from wireless carriers that lay people cannot understand.
