The Advantages of Choosing Ideal Cut Diamonds when Buying Loose Diamonds

When the time comes to shop for an engagement ring or for the central stone that will become an engagement ring, it is important to know which diamonds are the most fiery and beautiful and why prices can vary so much between stones that may be of equal carat weight.

In the category of round brilliant Loose Diamonds, there is a sub-heading known as Ideal Cut Diamonds. These stones have been cut and polished to specific proportions with the result being a stone that has the maximum possible amount of fire and sparkle. The range of specifications for the round cut diamond that is considered Ideal is what gives the stone the ability to reflect and refract the light that enters the stone and reflect it back to maximize the properties of the diamond.

The Belgian mathematician Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919 was the first to formulate the proportions for this diamond cutting style and it has been known as the Tolkowsky brilliant as another name for the same set of characteristics.

When designing Engagement Rings, the round brilliant cut stone is often the centerpiece and finding the perfect stone to star in this showpiece is frequently the reason that the Ideal cut is so popular.

Diamond Engagement Rings are not just gifts and they are much more than jewelry as well. The stone, the design of the setting and the sentiment attached to the ring makes it an investment of money and of emotion at the same time. When looking at Certified Loose Diamonds to choose one as the engagement stone, the fire of the diamond must be at its maximum.

To qualify as an Ideal cut, the percentages of the diamond's proportions must fall within a scientifically precise range and they must all be in compliance to earn the title of Ideal. These stones are rare since not all diamonds will lend themselves to this cut. The properties of the individual stone must allow for the ideal proportions without inclusions or flaws that could prevent the cut being done properly. The process is more painstaking and the stones that are given this cut are quite rare, as few as just one percent of all Loose Diamonds. This means that the Tolkowsky ideal will be a more expensive stone and also worth more than a non conforming round brilliant cut that does not have the cut and polish of an ideal.

When shopping for the perfect round brilliant stone, compare the Ideal cut with other round brilliant stones and see the difference the science and mathematics have made in creating the most beautiful diamond possible.
