Toyota Hilux – Pick-Up of the Year
The Toyota Hilux has been crowned Pick-Up of the Year by Total 4×4 magazine.
Toyota’s rugged pick-up claims to be able to go anywhere, and has been driven successfully in the world’s most hostile environments.
It even holds the record for being the first car to drive to both the Magnetic North and South Poles.
During its journey to the magnetic North Pole with the TopGear team, the Toyota Hilux braved hundreds of miles of arctic terrain in temperatures as low as -35 degrees Celsius.
Pick-up of the Year
The Total 4×4 judges praised the Toyota Hilux for standing out in such a competitive category, combining what they described as incredible capability and appealing price.
Editor Alan Kidd says that Toyota’s subtle updates have nudged it back to the front of the pick-up pack.
He picked out the new modern interior and the Toyota Hilux’s improved toughness as being particularly impressive.
Hard-working style
That’s how Toyota are branding the Hilux, and it’s easy to see why.
It’s able to tow 750 kgs unbraked or 2500 kg braked, and go anywhere, from arctic tundra to the jungles of South America.
And it does this without sacrificing comfort inside. The Toyota Hilux comes with a choice of single, extra and double cabs and all are designed to be as comfortable as the exterior is hard-working.
On the entry level Toyota Hilux HL2 this includes air-con, an audio system with USB/iPod connectivity and heated electric door mirrors.
The top-of the range Toyota Hilux Invincible boasts climate control, cruise control and the Toyota Touch system. This combines the audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, a touch screen and rear-view camera.
Refined yet rugged
Toyota have extensively revised the Hilux’s exterior to give the pick-up a more refined feel.
All of the Toyota Hilux range have a muscular yet streamlined body, and on the Invincible this is set off by chrome side bars with steps, and 17 inch alloys.
The power you need
The Toyota Hilux comes with a choice of two next-generation diesel engines.
The 2.5 litre D-4D engine maximises fuel efficiency, going 38.7 mpg and producing 194g/km CO2.
The most powerful engine is the 3.0 litre D-4D on the Invincible, combining clean diesel technology with superior performance.
