Why Choose Frameless Cabinet Doors?

A friend of mine came into some money last year when her uncle died and left her a respectable sum of cash and valuables, all the more appreciated as she had no idea that she was in line for any inheritance from him as he never seemed as though he would have much to leave, judging from his lifestyle. She had already started to have her kitchen renovated at the time and decided that the extra money would be used to fit the new style of frameless cabinet doors. Since these were a new concept for me, I looked into the world of the frameless cabinet and was surprised discover that frameless cabinets were a relatively new idea in the US but had been around in Europe for ages.

Basically there are two types of cabinets used mainly in the kitchen and bathroom. One is the “face frame cabinetry” and the other is the “frameless cabinetry”. There are advantages and dis-advantages to both styles and it is a matter of personal choice.

Face Frame Cabinetry

This is where the doors of the cabinet are fixed into a separate frame which is attached to the cabinet. With this style there is a plywood box for the cabinet and drawers which is then held together with a separate wooden frame at the front. This frame actually takes up room, leaving you with a couple of less inches of valuable space to use. It can be cheaper but not as sturdy and may cost you more in the long run.

Frameless Cabinetry

This is the more popular choice and is often called the “European-style cabinetry” where it has always been used and is only now catching on here. This is a simpler and more contemporary design where there is no front face frame and the whole cabinet is made of the same sturdy materials as the door. As the box itself acts as a frame for the frameless cabinet, there is more room on the inside, giving you more space to utilise.

The look is neater and cleaner and these frameless cabinets are easier to install than the older style of framed cabinets. In fact, with a little help, a frameless cabinet can be installed by an amateur DIY enthusiast, thereby saving you some money. This is only advisable if you are actually experienced in working with wood, are precise and have an eye for detail.

When I first heard the term “frameless cabinets”, my initial thought was that they were referring to a cabinet with no doors. This struck me as strange until I thought it through and did a little research on the internet. It does not mean that your cabinets will be boring, just that they will have a more modern look, but there are many colours and designs for you to choose from. You can customise your frameless cabinet doors to match the colour scheme you have already chosen for the kitchen, bathroom or other area of the house.
