What online tools are there to help consumers find the best gas and electricity prices?

The internet offers consumers greater freedom than ever before when it comes to comparing prices for similar products, but there are still some everyday expenses that many people don't consider looking for online - including essentials like electricity and gas.

Britain's deregulated energy markets mean there is strong competition between the major suppliers, which is great news for consumers as there can be many excellent value deals available. It's not always immediately obvious how to find these elusive deals however, especially as they may not always appear on price comparison websites.

These sites can be useful for allowing consumers to compare a number of standard tariffs side-by-side, but their benefits are limited, as they may be out of date or fail to acknowledge other options available from the same supplier. It's recommended that consumers visit the official websites of several different energy providers to learn details of more tariffs available, which may be better suited to their individual situation.

Electricity and gas prices are not the same in all parts of the country either, so you should be sure to check how prices compare for your specific area, rather than using a national average. Some suppliers offer a price comparison feature on their websites that allows consumers to get a realistic idea of how much they would be paying by entering their postcode along with details of the size of their property and its occupancy, and the results can be significantly different between providers.

One effective option for lowering your gas and electricity is to combine two individual tariffs into a single price plan, known as a dual fuel tariff. If you're currently receiving your electricity and gas from different suppliers, consolidating these supplies and receiving them from the same company under the same price plan could lead to big savings, as well as improve convenience.

If you're worried about the next price hike for electricity or gas and you want to protect your finances, you should look into arranging a fixed rate tariff online, which will ensure you pay the same amount each month for the duration of the contract. There can be a potential downside to fixed rate tariffs however, as you could end up paying a higher price for your energy supply if market prices fall.

If you run a business, you should also look into specialised business energy plans, which are tailor-made for the needs of commercial customers and can be much more economical than domestic electricity tariffs for larger premises.
