The Strengths of Concrete Paving and Slate Paving

By Stone Seller Subscribe to RSS | July 9th 2012 | Views:

The most fabulous thing about the current trends in interior design is the abundance of choices. From materials to design, homeowners are sure to find something that suits their lifestyle and personality. Two of the more popular paving materials are concrete and slate. One is man-made while the other is culled from the earth. Let’s take a closer look at their strengths and how they fair against other materials.

Concrete Paving

Roads built with concrete generally last longer than those paved with asphalt. That by itself is one very important benefit. Strength and durability should always be at the top of your list because there’s really no point in investing in something that you will find in shambles in but a few months. Concrete paving can handle extreme weather conditions and changes in temperature better. Concrete is stiff and rigid and it distributes weight over an area. Concrete paving is great at bearing heavy weight and withstanding a lot of traffic.

Another strong point of concrete paving is the color. Concrete paving creates a brighter and cleaner look compared to the black of asphalt. Concrete can even be painted, which is good should you ever feel like .

Those who are working within a schedule would also be happy to learn than doing Concrete Paving takes less time. If you were to pave a driveway using asphalt, you will need to lay a gravel and stone base. Unless you are using a commercial roller, this is going to need some time to set in.

Slate Paving

Slate paving is becoming such a hit among designers and homeowners. Why wouldn’t it be? Slate paving built from a natural stone is resistant to stress, heat and water. Laid in a base of sand, this type of construction will even handle earthquakes better.

But those who insist on slate paving certainly have more than its strength and functionality in mind. Slate paving does wonders to the exterior of any home. It has a rough, unpolished and mosaic-like surface. Beautiful, slave paving can accentuate any type of architectural design.

Slate paving comes in many finishes. Clefted slate has breaks and peaks in its surface, which is the closest to the natural appearance of the stone.

Honed slate meanwhile has a smoother finish flattened by a sander or polisher. For indoor flooring, some use slate so polished it has a very elegant glossy surface. Ask a professional which type of finish is best for slate paving for your garden or driveway.
