Science, Chemistry & the World of Vinyl Fabric
Vinyl fabric is actually a type of plastic. It seems somewhat odd that we call it a plastic, especially given the fact that most people have categorized it as its own thing altogether. But really, it is a carbon and hydrogen compound (C2H3), derived from ethylene. It’s a highly reactive group and can combine to form lots of different thicknesses and structures, hardnesses, and more. That’s why you’ll be able to purchase something like the online All Vinyl Fabric’s Capitano marine vinyl fabric, mesh vinyl fabric, faux leather vinyl, and even vinyl house siding or vinyl based clothing. There are many more options and uses for vinyl, as well. Because it is so adaptive chemically and physically, and additionally it is relatively inexpensive, it has become very popular and useful in our society.
For instance, you can consider the simple aforementioned Capitano marine vinyl fabric, and apply it to boating seat upholstery. Or, you can use that same fabric as boat flooring, or indoor/outdoor room flooring. Then we can consider the mesh vinyl fabric in succession to the Capitano fabric, because it is a similar marine grade, but it’s woven in a mesh look and has its own texture and feel that can really change the usage of the fabric. Vinyl is usually shiny, tough, and flexible all at once, which gives it a unique combination of characteristics. This appeals to many people and works well as an inexpensive way to upgrade their look in a home or boat design.
Interestingly, vinyl has even been used in medicine, where it was considered for a time to be a great anesthetic by many pharmacologists. For a time, this worked out well, but there were certain factors related to the chemical structure of the vinyl that didn’t seem safe enough to merit continued use of the material in this way.
All and all, though, vinyl is an amazing sort of fabric and can really be a great way to expand your horizons in terms of home design. Knowing the sound science behind it, too, will help you appreciate it for all it is able to do!
