Modular clean rooms

By Nicholas Subscribe to RSS | March 20th 2012 | Views:

Most of us consider our living rooms and our bedrooms to be rather clean. These are 'clean rooms' and for most purposes such as eating, sleeping, breathing and living they are more than adequate. However there is also another more specific definition for the term 'clean room' or 'cleanroom' which requires a bit more than a 'recent vacuum'. So what is a cleanroom? And what is one useful for? And what is meant by a 'modular' clean room? Here we will look at the answers to all those questions.

A clean room is a term to describe controlled environments which are used for lab work and for the manufacture of products. When you are in a room around a home or office or any other conventional setting, while it might seem very clean, the air is no doubt likely to be filled with contaminants and bacteria. This comes from many things. For instance there will be tiny particles of dust in the air which come from your property, dirt outside and even your skin. This includes unhealthy skin particles, water droplets, bacteria and toxins all of which will fill the environment although they are invisible to the naked eye. Just vacuuming and dusting will not remove these elements. There will always be patches of bacteria that escape, there will always be dust mites and as you clean you will disturb and create new mess as well.

Just to ram this point home, your typical office air will contain somewhere between 500,000 to 1,000,000 particles that are 0.5 microns or larger (a human hair is 75-100 microns in diameter). For most applications this is not a problem, and if you are using the space to create documents or to manage contacts then a few thousand particles won't get in your way. However if you are manufacturing something that is highly complex and that relies on precise chemical reactions then suddenly they do become a problem. Take for instance the case of the Hubble Space Telescope. At one point the production was halted due to a fault caused by a particle that was smaller than 0.5 microns. Meanwhile imagine if you were to open a pot of face cream and to see that it had small particles of dust in it – it would damage that company's reputation greatly.

The clean room then is aimed at removing this problem so that the room is clean in a more 'clinical' way. To this end there are different classes of clean room which indicate conditions they create. A 'class 100' clean room for instance ensures there are never more than 100 particles, while a class 10,000 clean room ensures that there are a maximum of 10,000 and so on.

Modular meanwhile means built up of parts. A modular room then is one that can be added onto an existing building, and you might be able to use several modular clean rooms in order to create a floor plan and layout that you require for your business.

Usually you need to get cleanrooms installed by a professional for them to work. You can do it yourself if you are handy though, if you buy a modular clean room.
