Insulate Your Home Yourself and Save Money
When most people think of insulating their homes they think of hiring a professional. But, I want you to know this is not usually necessary. In fact, most home insulation projects can be completed by the average person. This is your chance to save money and also make your home more comfortable and energy efficient.
Do you have rooms in your home that are cold or drafty? Is your kitchen or bathroom floor always cold? Does it seem like you are using your furnace too much in the winter or too much air conditioning in the summer? Well, you are not alone. There are millions of under insulated homes in the country, especially the older homes.
Adding insulation to your home is a relatively simple process, as long as you don t mind getting a little dirty and sweaty. First you need to do a simple energy audit of your home. This will require you to crawl into the attic and also the under floor areas of your home. Bring a tape measure with you. Look around the areas. Does your attic have the required amount of insulation? Are there bare areas up there? Take a look at the ventilation areas as well. Are the soffit vents protected with baffles or are they covered with insulation making them worthless? What about the under floor? Has it been insulated? Do you have a vapor barrier on the ground?
Once you have determined the areas that need attention you can go to your local home improvement and purchase insulation. You can also rent a insulation blowing machine for use in the attic areas. Don t forget about buying weatherstripping kits as well. A lot of heat can escape through doors and windows that aren t properly sealed.
So, before hiring a professional, take a look at your home energy needs yourself. You will be surprised at how simple it is to insulate your own home. In fact most home insulation projects can be done on a weekend from start to finish.
