A clock is an instrument used to measure time. The concept of such a device which measures the time intervals is not new and clock is perhaps one of the oldest inventions of man. However the type of time measuring clocks used by the ancient civilizations worked on different principles and included water clocks, sand glasses and sun dials. The Chinese were the first to develop an astronomical clock in the 11th century but the first ever proper public clock was developed in Europe in 1353 A.D. But now there are various types of clocks available in the market. Apart from displaying accurate time these beautiful clocks enhance the beauty of your interior.
1. Grandfather Clocks - Grandfather clocks at one time were in the homes of the upper class and thus it was a status symbol. Over time, grandfather clocks moved into middle class homes because they were inherited from family members or other people someone has known in their life. Grandfather clocks are still one of the more expensive ones to own because of the detailing and mechanisms in the clock. These types of clocks attract the eye of the visitor.
2. Pendulum Clocks - The most common type of pendulum clocks are the ones that hang on the wall and so they work as a wall clock. The pendulum swings back and forth while the clock ticks away.
3. Mantle Clocks - If you have watched any movies or television shows, you will occasionally catch a clock on the mantle of the fireplace. There are people who still have them in their homes on their fireplace mantles. These mantle clocks give very antique look to the home.
4. Carriage Clocks - Carriage clocks are a rectangular clock that was used during travel in the 19th century. Carriage clocks are often used as a decorative item in book cases or on the mantel these days.
5. Neon Clocks - In the earlier times, neon clocks were most often seen in dimly lit bars. As time moved on, neon clocks made their way into restaurants and soda shops. When time moved on even further, the neon clocks have made their way into homes and other businesses.
6. Digital Clocks- The new rolling clocks that are found in schools and colleges are called digital clocks. Apart from schools they can be found at banks and other businesses. Other types of digital clocks can be found on a cell phone, computer, and many alarm clocks in today's society.
7. Sun Dials - Before the time of the mechanical clocks, sun dials were used in many ancient cultures. You can find sun dials for gardens in resin, plastic, and cast iron. Most of the time sun dials can only be found during the spring and summer. However, specialty clock stores may have them in stock year round.
8. Atomic Clocks - Atomic clocks are the types of clocks that are the most precise time keeping devise available. Atomic clocks can be bought in various shapes and sizes and these are generally used for scientific purposes.
9. Musical Clocks - Cuckoo clocks are the most popular types of musical clocks. These musical clocks come under the category of wall clocks and these clocks are a beauty to watch.
