Part number SDX-500C/BM is a high speed AIT-2 internal drive which has been intelligently engineered by Sony. This high capacity AIT2 tape drive can record up to 130GB information on a 8mm AIT backup tape at 2.6:1 compression. Sony has increased the transfer speed of SDX-500C/BM drive to 15.6 MB per second. Introduction of advanced helical scan mechanism has elevated the media recording performance and recording density of the AIT-2 drive.

Sony AIT2 drive offers faster data searching in comparison to other tape technologies. Faster searching is enabled by the innovative MIC (memory in cassette) mechanism added to the SDX-500C/BM tape drives. MIC feature is an exclusive mechanism offered by the Sony AIT data tape drives. MIC is a built-in 64 kb memory. This feature makes the Sony AIT drives more advantageous. MIC technology speeds up the file access and tape loading time. Media loading time of Sony SDX-500C/BM drive is less than ten seconds while 27 to 37 seconds is its data access time. Searching speed of the drive is 720 MB/sec (native). Rewind speed of the tape drive is 160 inches/sec. Its drum rotational speed is 6,400 rpm. Now you won’t have to increase your I.T budget because the AIT-2 SDX-500C/BM tape drive provides additional benefits to its users through its backward compatibility feature.

Sony SDX-500C/BM drive fully supports and is read/write compatible with AIT-1 and AIT2 tape media. Below are the compatible AIT1 and AIT2 media tape cartridges that are fully supported by Sony SDX-500C/BM tape drive:

Sony AIT-1 35GB tape, Sony AIT1 25GB backup tape, AIT-2 Sony 50GB cartridge, and Sony AIT-3 100 GB data tape

The respective part numbers of these Sony AIT tapes are:

SDX1-35C, SDX1-25C, SDX2-50C and SDX2-36C.

All these Sony AIT tapes provide high class performance with SDX-500C/BM AIT2 drive. Now with the backward compatibility offered by Sony SDX-500C/BM drive, you can also utilize the AIT-1 data tapes along with AIT2 tape cartridges. Therefore this feature of Sony AIT2 drive will certainly secure your previous investments and will provide you easy access to the stored data on the AIT-1 backup tapes. High capacity Sony AIT2 tape drive delivers increased cost efficiency with tape media cartridges of both AIT1 and AIT 2. Transfer speed of SDX-500C/BM drive is 12 MB/s (compressed). Sony has also introduced new AIT tapes for a wide variety of users. Readers of this article should also look at the following Sony ait tapes, sdx4-200c, sdx5-400c, sdx5-cl, sdx3x150cww.

Sony has engineered a new robust geometry for the tape drive’s head. It has incorporated advanced technologies which significantly reduces the tape/head pressure. The average useful life of high speed Sony SDX-500C/BM drive’s head is almost 50,000 hours which is many times more than that of the other tape drives. Sony AIT-2 SDX-500C/BM drive features a highly reliable active head cleaning system that boosts its MTBF (Mean time between failures) to 300,000 POH. The recording density of Sony SDX-500C/BM tape drive is 167,000 bpi. Sony SDX-500C/BM AIT-2 drive provide exceptional compatibility and can easily be integrated in automated libraries, servers, data centers and work-stations.
