Sony AIT 4 Tape is the Most Space Efficient Solution for the Long Term Storage Demands

Due to rapid increase in E-commerce, the advanced file management systems and commercial applications must provide fast access to the large amounts of organizational data, and most importantly, with rock solid reliability. Stiff data retention laws and these stringent demands have data-rich organizations clamoring for compact, intelligent and easy-to-use backup systems.

Sony provided the solution with its breakthrough advanced intelligent tape AIT format. Its multiple generations accommodate the demands of continuing data growth without sacrificing data-center space. The most reliable and low-cost backup system for midrange and small data centers is Sony AIT4 tape. The compact, high-speed AIT 4 drives and durable media tape make it the most compelling tape-based system for financial institutions, workstation backups and branch offices.

Sony has developed two models of its AIT4 tapes; one supports the W.O.R.M mechanism, which is SDX4200WWW, and the other re-writable backup tape is SDX4200CWW. AIT 4 tape is the industry’s most compact cartridge featuring 200 GB capacity. Smaller size facilitates the users to store more quantities of Sony AIT 4 cartridges without increasing the media storage space. W.O.R.M (write-once, read-many) is a reliable data-protection technology that does not allow deletions and alterations. So in event of malicious access, the stored data cannot be tampered.

Sony AIT4 drive family offers an impressive range of models including SDX-D900V/NB (external) and SDX-900V (internal) units. These drives achieve an incredible recording density of 203,000 BPI, thus enabling storage of higher data amount onto a smaller tape area. Data compressing capability of these AIT 4 drives is superior to the rival formats. Sony has enhanced the data compression to 2.6:1. The competing tape-based systems deliver up to 2:1 compression. The AIT4 customers can pack more volume of data in compressed mode. The compressed capacity is 320GB higher than its native capacity. So, preserve a staggering 520GB data onto these AIT 4 tapes and enjoy the benefit of significantly reduced media handling.

Value-conscious customers are attracted to Sony AIT4 system because it offers read compatibility all the way up to the 1st generation AIT 1 media tape. So the data stored on previous AIT tapes can be accessed with reliability, and the budget needed for upgrading the AIT tape system will be reduced significantly. Another benefit of installing AIT4 drive is that it operates AIT3 tapes for write operations as well. That means you have the compatibility of read/write with AIT4 and AIT3. With a single drive, you can enjoy compatibility with four AIT generations, which is the most compelling attribute.

Data processing speed of Sony AIT 4 drives reaches 24Mbps in un-compressed mode. Sony AIT4 drives use helical-scan technology for data recording. The extraordinary smoothness of AIT-4 cartridge’s base film accelerates the tape forward/rewind speed, while reducing media deterioration. Capacity of data buffer has been enhanced to 96MB, allowing the Sony AIT-4 drive to handle the burden of increased duty cycles and ensure uninterrupted operations.

IT managers won’t have to worry about dust accumulation, because the AIT4 drives feature a smart self cleaning system. This intelligent mechanism enhances the head life and ensures tape longevity as well.
