Advanced printers setting the toner

By Anne Mary Subscribe to RSS | February 10th 2012 | Views:

Similar to many of the electronic devices created through the years, early versions of the computer printer were not only rather ugly and cumbersome, but also far too expensive, and therefore not fit for home use. For a long time the only way you would ever come across one, would be in an office environment, or some such business organization. However, cost has fallen significantly over the past decade and as a consequence, more and more people have seen the full value of introducing one to be part of their own personal home office system.

All the progressive versions brought out in the past few years have seen more and more advances, to the point where they no longer simply print documents, they now undertake a whole range of everyday functions. Fundamentally, there are two different types of printer, which are the laser and the inkjet. The laser is more the choice of the large companies, who have a huge printing requirement to satisfy, whilst the inkjet is more likely to suit those who need a far smaller scale of reproduction. The laser works by basically using static electricity to affix powder or toner, onto the target paper and melt it by the use of a hot roller, creating the desired image.

The toner is effectively dry ink, containing colour and plastic particles. It passes through a fuser that is built into the computer, and heat from this transfers it across to paper, or card. The quality is exceptional, due to the extremely high resolution that it is capable of achieving, meaning no smudges occur and furthermore, it is remarkably fast in its output. Whole pages, rather than single lines, are copied immediately, and the entire process happens in the blink of an eye. The beauty of the laser printer is that it is so rapid, a list of jobs can be actioned and left to process themselves, in what is known as spooling, whilst still being able to work on other applications on the computer. Technology has allowed the two devices to retain continuous and reliable communication.

The inkjet on the other hand, sprays the smallest of drops of ink onto the targeted paper, to create the necessary image. These dots are so minute they cannot be seen by the human eye, so do not even attempt to look for them, just trust the practical engineering and marvel at the results. It was after the introduction of these types of printers, that colour printing was revolutionized. The print head scans the desired page in a horizontal direction, whilst a motor built within, rolls the paper in a vertical direction, and all this happens in a fraction of a second.

The contemporary multi-functioning printers, continue to develop at break-neck speed, incorporating many different gadgets into one specialized device. This means that the latest versions can actually interface with media instruments such as memory sticks or cards, digital cameras and scanners. In addition, as nothing stands still, further advancements are not just likely, they are inevitable.
