Topsoil and Its Components

Many times you hear that for proper growth of plants you need best quality of topsoil. As all we know that for proper growth of body and brain of human being he need good notorious diet and like the same plants also need good quality of soil or you can say that topsoil for their growth. Many of us will not have any idea that what is topsoil. Now we will discuss what topsoil is.

Topsoil is the upper most layer of soil that contains all the important organic material and micro organisms required for the growth of a plant. It is about 3 to 7 inches thick layer of soil and most of the biological activities take place in this area only. Topsoil is commonly used in the lawns and gardens. Topsoil contains highly nutritive organic elements required by plants in the process of photosynthesis.

The main ingredients of topsoil are Minerals, microorganisms, water, air, debris, animal waste, bacteria and fungi. Topsoil is bit darker in color than the subsoil. Topsoil formation is the result of bio degradation and decomposition process and it takes about 100 of years to form a thin layer of high nutritive topsoil.

There are three main component of soil. Growth of plant is depends upon these which are as follow:-

1. Right soil pH: - 6.0pH - 7.0 pH is good for growth for all type of plants. Soil less than 7pH are acidic and more that 7pH is alkaline.

2. Right soil composition: - Soil is mixture of clay, silt, sand. Best composition of these three is 38% of clay 21% of silt and 41% of silt. If quantity of clay is high than it is called heavy soil and problem of this soil is that in dry weather it tends to crack.

3. Right water content: - Plant and vegetable need at least one inch of water and best way to use drip water system.

If you are planning for garden for your home it is very important that which quality of soil you are using. Once you get soil which is rich in nutrients so as to promote a healthy garden. If you get topsoil you can also plant your own vegetable.
