Going about installing a modified roofing system
There is a vast range of roofing materials that we use to cap houses and commercial buildings. One of the cheapest and most widely used is asphalt for sloped roof installation. Many North American homes make use of this inexpensive roofing system. It’s based on the same material used in asphalt shingles, either a fiberglass mat or an organic felt mat. While sheet metal fabricators can install a hardier roofing system, those who can’t afford it have the option to choose roll roofing. If you’re looking for have a modified roofing system but aren’t sure if you are made of roll roofing, then follow these tips to find out.
Inspect your roof. A sloped roof installation with roll roofing will measure about 36 inches in width between the seams running parallel to the eaves. Modified bitumen, on the other hand, is about 39 inches in width. Pull at a small bit of the roofing material. If it’s modified bitumen, it won’t come off that easily. However, roll roofing membranes tend to tear faster,
For your modified roofing system, remove all of the material and sweep off dust and dirt with a stiff broom. Check for damages like holes and tears.
If you’re not taking the help of sheet metal fabricators and choose to go with roll roofing, then lay down the insulation boards evenly. Screw on galvanized screws so that you get a uniform appearance and feel. Sweep excess debris and dirt.
Roll out the membrane and overlap each edge by about four inches. Make sure to overhang the material by around three inches and cut holes for vents and pipes. Wait for at least half an hour for the membrane to settle.
Roll back each section of the membrane and apply bonding adhesive with an extension paint roller. Wait for 15 minutes and fold the membrane. Use a roof roller to press the material in place.
Repeat the process for each section of the membrane, making sure to press everything down flat. Once all the layers have been pasted, wait for an hour before going through the entire roof with the roller.
Fold the overlapping membranes according to position. For those areas where the membrane meets the wall, trim the excess and paste the remaining.
For your changed roofing system, take away all of the fabric and sweep off mud and dirt with a stiff broom. Check for damages like holes and tears.
If you’re not taking the assistance of sheet metal fabricators and value more highly to come with roll roofing, then lay down the insulation boards evenly. Screw on galvanized screws so you get a regular look and feel. Sweep excess debris and dirt.
