Imagine walking down the flight of stairs leading to your basement only to find water submerging everything, including the last three steps. Perhaps this is not a common type of wet basement problem but it has occurred in several instances. Your wet basement issue may be more of damp floors and wet books caused by a leaking foundation or cracked walls. Whichever the case, a wet basement requires repair. However before you run off to the bank to ask for a bank loan to carry out wet basement repair consider the following ways to save.

· First, try to determine what the source of the water is and whether you can fix the problem yourself. You can do this using an aluminum foil taped to the basement wall. Leave it for several days then come check it. If the foil has, moisture is on the outside then it means the problem is condensation, if on the inside then you have a seepage problem.

A condensation problem can be solved by improving the ventilation in your basement, ensuring the windows are closed in the wet season, fixing any leaking pipes and the use of a dehumidifier. A good heavy-duty one should cost you about $250.

·If the problem is seepage, you should first look for obvious causes. Clear the gutters of obstructions and extend downspouts up to ten feet away from the house to ensure rainwater is drained away from the house. If you do not have gutters or downspouts, install them.

Check whether water is collecting around window wells and seeping into the basement through them and install window well covers if this is the case. Trim or remove shrubs or flowers around your foundation as they reduce ventilation and may be causing moisture to collect. If your lawn is sloped towards your house, try causing it to slope in the opposite direction.

· If none of these brings a solution, then it might be that ground water is entering your basement through cracks on the wall or floor. You can install an interior drain to remove the water although this will not solve the basic problem. Do it yourself kits are readily available in any hardware store and will cost about $10.50 to $12.50 per foot of drainage.

You can get rid of the cracks in your basement using hydraulic cement or rubberized filling compounds. A tube of caulk costs around $7 and a quart of sealer about $12. You can also use waterproof paint to seal this cracks. It does the job effectively if applied properly. The paint costs up to $25 a gallon.

The cost of repairing a wet basement however solely depends on the problem. The homeowner cannot solve some issues and it becomes vital to call a waterproofing company. Shop around for waterproofing companies asking them for estimates and compare this with the work they say they will do. Even if you cannot fix the problem yourself, make sure you go for a company that will do it for you in the most cost effective way.
