A party needs someone to keep tracked of whats going on within the group, this is usually the Hunters job. Being an expert in long range weapons, the Hunter is great at pulling foes towards their group to ambush. As a Hunter part of your responsibilities are to be the early warning system for your group. The Hunter is usually kept out of harms way being a long range player which is a major plus since they can't heal or resurrect themselves.

As a Hunter you will often be expected to store food and ammunition in your inventory and keep track of stuff like mobs, patrols and aggro. Don't think that the Hunter just cowards in the back of a group. The Hunter is the long range weapon expert and is the only character that can rapidly fire long range weapons using the Auto Shot skill. The Hunter also is the beast master of world of warcraft, befriending wild pets to fight along side them.

The Hunter can be a challenging character to play in the beginning but it is a very powerful class that is easy to level up and considered to be very valuable to any group when played correctly.

Some points to consider when choosing a Hunter race:

As a Hunter you will want to take your time deciding on what race you wish to be, it will make a difference on how you will play world of warcraft. Both Alliance and Horde characters are very adept to being a Hunter. If you are a Hunter for the Alliance, you may be a dwarf or night elf (draenei if you have the Burning Crusade expansion). I personally prefer dwarves as Alliance hunters because of their Gun specialization and Stoneform spell but that certainly doe's not mean dwarves are the only good Hunters.

Naturally stealth is beneficial when playing a Hunter so the night elf is a great choice due to Prowl and Shadowmeld abilities. Many players consider the night elf to be the best choice for an Alliance Hunter. If you would like to play a more aggressive style hunter consider the draenei for they will provide heal over time with the Gift of the Naaru and the Heroic Presence talent will assist the hunter and the hunters pets.

If your for the horde a Hunter is also a great character to play.

Naturally the trolls Berserker DPS increase and Bow Specialization makes them formidable Hunters. The troll has the very effective Beast Slaying talent which increases their damage to beasts. The so called icing on the cake for the troll is that they can restore health using Regeneration. Warstomp is a great tauren Hunter talent for keeping your enemies at bay without getting to close to them. The orc race Hunter works a little differently, using its Hardness skill to resist an enemies stun attack by 15% and using Command to increase their pets damage by 5%. Blood elves (available with the Burning Crusade expansions) give the Hunter the Arcane Torrent skill effectively attacking enemy casters and replenishing mana much quicker.

New characters are not very versatile so play within your means. For the first several levels simply get a feel of your character and what you are able to do with it. Keep your fighting time short at first, don't be stubborn and get your character killed over and over again. Keep yourself out of the scrap in the beginning to prevent having your character die too often. Being on a quest at all times will help your character get better items and make leveling up easier. Always double check that you have done every quest in the area you are in and milk the ones that will help you in leveling up.
