ACLU and Center for Reproductive Rights Fight Ban in Arizona
In Arizona the ACLU and the Center for Reproductive Rights filed a complaint hoping to halt the institution of the “fetal Pain” law which would ban abortion after 20 weeks starting in the beginning of August.
This legislation, like many other before it, attempts to ban abortion at the point where the fetus is able to feel pain – and there for it is deemed inhumane to perform an abortion. However, medical experts have not been able to determine the stage of development when nerves become active enough to transmit pain signals to the brain. This makes legislation such as the bill in Arizona suspect.
"No court has ever upheld such an extreme and dangerous abortion ban," Arizona ACLU legal director Dan Pochoda says in a statement to the press. "Instead of passing unconstitutional laws and blocking women's access to critical health services, our legislators should be working to ensure that all women get the care they need to have healthy pregnancies and protect their families."
