Three Simple Guidelines for Avoiding a DUI

Every 22 minutes, someone loses his or her life due to an alcohol-related accident. With more than 23,000 people killed each year because of alcohol-related traffic collisions, each state government follows strict guidelines for ensuring drivers to do not drink and drive. From suspending a license to requiring drivers to enroll in AA, all punishments aim to help curb the habit of drunk driving. Still, people will drink, and they will drive. If you do drink, it is in your best interest to follow certain guidelines before driving home.

Call Someone

You may have been at a bar with friends, and you stuck around to talk to some new friends you made. Don’t take the risk of driving home, especially if you had too much to drink. Most people fall into the trap of thinking that “they’re fine to drive home” or “I only had ‘X’ amount of beers.” If you’ve been drinking, regardless of whether it’s one beer or 10, don’t try to drive home.

You might be perfectly fine to drive home, but say your taillight is out, and a police officer stops you and smells the alcohol on your breath. You may not be over the legal limit, but after taking a breathalyzer test, you’re at exactly .08%. At this level, you’re considered drunk, and could face the legal ramifications of a DUI. You don’t want to have to end up calling a Orange County DUI lawyer; it’s far cheaper to call a friend and have him pick you up than have a lawyer bail you out of jail.

Sober Up at Home or At a Hotel

If you’re impaired, chances are you’ll be driving like it on the road. Don’t take the risk of getting pulled over and cited for a DUI. Call a cab to take you home or stay at a hotel. Staying at a hotel until you sober up is a cheaper option; you’ll have to pay $1,000-$3,000 in penalties because of a DUI. A room at a hotel will cost you less than $100 for one night.

Don’t Sleep In Your Car

Some police officers are particularly strict if a drunk individual is sleeping in his car. Doing so can result in a DUI, even if you just had the keys in the ignition. Sure, you might have your Newport Beach DUI lawyer fight the charges and win, but why risk having to call up a lawyer and deal with the legal hassles? Don’t sleep in your car. Go to a hotel or stay at a friend’s house until you sober up.
