The Colorful Journey of Crayon Pencils

“We come in different colors, shapes and sizes. Our use is to give sketches and drawing a life like appearance; but we also the little ones smile. We were invented by the people of the west. When we were invented, we appeared only in the eight primary colors, i.e. black, brown, blue, red, purple, orange, yellow, and green; but with the evolution of time, we underwent changes in our shape, color and variety. Now hundreds of our varieties are available in the market; we sparkle with glitter, glow in the dark, smell like flowers, can change colors and can also wash off walls and other surface materials. And do you know who we are? We are the Crayons”.

Crayons are probably the best mate every child in school has. These have become apart of school accessory because of their colors. The best part of a crayon is that these are safe even on the skin. Thus a child can easily color the fruits or vegetables without coloring the hands or face. Europe is said to be the birth place of the modern crayon. It was in the year 1903 that two cousins, Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smithhad invented these coloring sticks. At that time, people just had to spend a nickel (a United States coin worth one twentieth of a dollar) to get a box of these color sticks. Alice Stead Binney, the wife of Edwin Binney, named these as crayon. She took the French words for chalk (craie) and oily (oleaginous) and created the word crayon out of these two French words.

In the initial stage, crayons were made out of charcoal and oil. Later, on powdered pigments of various hues replaced the charcoal. Years later it was discovered that if oil was replaced by wax, the color stick would become sturdier and easier to handle. Since then, the crayons are made from wax. The growing popularity of these wax color pencils attracted other companies to produce crayons. Gifting a box of these crayons to a toddler can be a good idea. It is said that when kids draw different shapes and patterns on their notebook, they actually are expressing their inner feelings and ideas. With crayons coming in different shapes, it is better to provide the toddler flat or thick crayons. When toddlers try coloring a drawing with thin wax pencils, they often get frustrated because it is difficult for them to hold it with their fingers for a long span of time. Children also enjoy covering a sheet of paper with crayon colors, then using a toothpick to create shapes by scratching over the crayon color.

It is important to supervise young children when using colored pencils or sharp objects, like toothpicks. Coloring is really a fun filled and creative activity for growing learners; but while the little toddlers use crayons to draw objects, parents should keep a close supervision on them. It is a common tendency among toddlers to taste everything that looks nice to them. Since crayons are made of wax, these may cause serious damage to the child’s stomach. So parents need to be watchful of their children when they have fun filling in the colours with their crayons.
