Selecting a research area for dissertation subject in the final year is the most difficult task of all.

Most of the graduate students get stuck here when it comes to writing a thesis. This is the first step, and you have to be very confident while taking it.

The purpose of writing an extended essay is that you must know which field you are best in, and which subject you can carry on as your carrier. The basic rule of choosing a research area is to revise all your two year is courses, and then decide which subject or which field occupies most of your interest. The course that you loved studying, in which you can conjure innovative ideas of your own, will become the foundation of your thesis.

A brand new title is not necessary:

In that particular course you must decide which direction of thought intrigued you the most. Which is the area that you would love to research on? The most interesting thing to do would be to choose an old one and to research on it with a brand new concept and perspective. It is not at all necessary that you choose or make up a new title. You could work on one of the subject matter from you course.

The title selected must be suitable to your degree:

What is important, while selecting a title, is that the issue you have chosen must be relevant to your master is degree. You must know what your committee is expecting of you, and you must act according to that.

Your title should relate to a real problem in the corresponding field:

To make your essay more interesting you can discuss an existing problem in the area of your research. You could discuss in detail how the problem has been a major drawback in the field, and how you could overcome the difficulty. You could recommend successful ways of facing the challenges posed by the area of study.

Select a title that is narrow and covers only one question:

Throughout the dissertation you must try that you focus only on one question, on one problem only. The entire essay must be about only one singular question. This will decrease your span of research and make your work easier. You will have only one problem at hand that you will be solving via your essay. In this way you will be able to complete your task in the allotted time. Furthermore, it will give you more time to read and understand one particular theme more broadly.

Last but not the least; the title should be of your own interest:

The theme should be the one that you would love to research on. If it is not of your interest, it will be very difficult for you to research. You will just try to get rid of it in the end, because of frustration. But if it is of your personal interest than you will love the task, and you will put every bit of your heart in it.

Choosing a dissertation topic is a very difficult job. Many students make mistakes in selecting a title for their extended essay, and end up facing a rejection by the committee. There are some rules and regulations that you must follow while choosing your research area.
