A Manual to Guide You to a Successful Literature Review Writing

By Donna Santos Subscribe to RSS | January 11th 2012 | Views:

Literature review is the lengthiest and most difficult chapter of the entire dissertation. It takes a lot of quality research and time to compose a successful critical analysis. Following instructions might prove helpful to you.

Structure of the paper:

The writing structure of the research paper and the critical analysis mainly depends on your topic and the subject. What you require to do is to summarize and contrast the similar opinions or contrasts of different writers on your topic. You must not stick to only what one author writes, and then proceed by giving a general idea about what the other author writes.

Linking words are necessary in writing literature review. If you are grouping together the ideas of similar writers, then you must use these to create uniformity. You can use linking words where you are writing a similar dissimilarity between the writers. These are very important to connect one idea with the other.

You must end your essay by doing a summary of the whole context.

The real challenge:

What you are going to read for writing the research paper keeps real importance. Most of the universities give their students a list of preferred reference books, journals, sites, etc. Most of these lists contain great references to great published work. This could be of help to you. You make all the decisions related to your paper, so it is necessary that you focus on your parameters or research question.

Set some objectives before beginning your writing, set your goals and what you want to achieve at the end. Your attention must be on the main issues of the dissertation question, do not wander in your writing. Stick to your main issues.

Your context should contain a clear line of argument. You must have prepared notes and comments while reading your research. Those will come handy here, while you are writing. Ensure that:

give a brief introduction of your topic and the research question in the first paragraph.

You statements and arguments must proved by valid references. You can quote some writers where appropriate.

Also mention in your writing those opinions which conflict with your direction of thinking.

Your committee must have provided you with a format of writing. You must strictly follow that format. Keep your context brief and understandable, and avoid plagiarism as much as possible. Do not use abusive or offensive language, and your attitude towards the general public must be neutral.

Avoid plagiarizing your sources as much as you can. Even if you are copying someone’s opinion, always cite your sources. Do not mix your own thoughts with the opinions of other authors. Make sure that you properly refer to your notes, and follow your line of thought.

While you are summarizing the literature reviews of other writers, do not forget to put in your thoughts and findings. These are the main essence of the writing.
