In spite of that you can get thrilled of the native kingfishers ablaze in psychedelic colours, experience a walk under rookeries of egrets and night herons or lone golden-backed woodpeckers and even enjoyment in the acrobatics of the paradise fly-catchers. Kumarakom is blessed by the scenic beauty of nature, breathtaking backwaters, where one can enjoy boating, fishing and watching beautiful birds at the same time. Kumarakom on the Vembanad Lake is mesmerizing. scattered with lush green mangrove forests, paddy fields that stretch out far into the horizon and rows and rows of coconut palms that criss-cross the backwater canals, the small village of Kumarakom is in actually a group of a boat ride into the countryside which offers you a close look at the life in the villages. One can see fishermen moving around the lake with boat while women are in neck deep water searching for Karimeen fish. Tourist can travel down the Kumarakom backwaters in houseboats, which have a beautiful living room, a bedroom, a bathroom and a private sit-out for vacationers. For larger group these houseboats are joined together to become boat trains.
Kumarakom tourism is not completed without viewing Pathrimanal island .It is located on the border of Kottayam and Alapuzha. The name Pathiramanal term as sands of night which is 10 acre island on the backwaters and is haunt to many rare varieties of migratory birds from different parts of the world. This small island on the backwaters is a favorite haunt for many migratory birds from different parts of the world. This island lies between Thaneermukkom and Kumarakom, and is reachable only by boat. The scenic beauty of this place is awesome.
